What's Catching You Fish?

A'ight....so begins clarkman's season of what's "almost" catching you fish....

That faux musky slayer as seen on the vise site (I'll grab a pic once I'm in front of a computer) accounted for a couple of follows including his little tiger who following it several times while I was wading a shallow part of the lake... probably a low 30 inch fish.

Even faux muskies get torn up by faux sex....
That white spot in front of his eyes must be bugging the hell out of him…”I want a dark clarkman fly, but it looks white to me”

some of them do get a little beat up this time of year with their faux sex.

Great looking balanced leech; I see the hook is barbed. Is that intentional or..........? Just curious, no offense intended.
good catch, didn't even realize it until I looked at the pic. Usually smash my barbs down as much to protect me as the fish. Couldn't have been doing too much damage, well over a dozen water releases that never saw the net.

I try to remember to smash barbs before I tie but you know? Once in a great while, I forget. It's still a great looking black leech.

one of mine from a few years back, bobber down over and over even when the fly was coming apart..........

Had my first really good lake session yesterday with some bigger fish. Early it was all about chironomids. I was using black (the one that was in the empty slot) but apparently about any color would have worked.

Around 10 the callibaetis started hatching. Fish were rising to them for the next 6+ hours! I struggled to find a fly they liked. Finally tried one that was pretty beat up and the biggest fish of the day ate it. One of the best calli eats ever for me. Most of the fish were diving straight back to the bottom. I saw this fish rise in fairly deep water. It only went down 3 feet or so. I could easily see him and put it 5 feet in front. He casually swam over and slurped it.

Pumped one more stomach towards the end of the afternoon to see if they had focused on the callis or were still eating chironos. The answer was yes.

This olive willie-ish jig got my biggest trout out of "my" lake so far, a nice brown trout!

I've just been going out on the dock with no net and pulling the little fish up until I can grab the fly. That wasn't happening with this fish and 4X tippet. Luckily my gear fishing neighbor was coming by in his boat and netted it for me.

Here's my picture of him holding it:

As far as I know, they haven't stocked browns in here for years. It put a nice bend in my 4wt.

He sent me a photo of me:

A willy trailed by a black leech is always a good pair for me. Getting bored with the lake though, just a week and half and the real fishing gets underway.

decided to go with my favorite faux musky color combo for a little bit....black and orange (I never did fish the white/orange, but the other two also put fish in the net).

Fished this kind of stuff this weekend

Hooked up with my first summer whitefish but couldn't get into a position to net the beast and it got off. Could see some others but they wouldn't play. Feel good about the progress on that front, getting holding locations figured out, maybe. I should know better than a 4wt and 4x though, got pooled by one and a second summer runner, well, at least I got it into position if front of me so I could drop the tip and slack line it. Was a bit wounded after a basalt stone I thought was good gave out climbing out of the river at one point.
