I Know It Can It Be Done But Should I?

Ffishing and Boating Only Related Only Please...

I will start:

A creek like Rock Creek that is slippery as goose snot, 6" of moving water is no issue with a felt sole, carbide-tipped studs and a new wading staff.

It looks only 3' deep. Not a a problem!

I floated it last week, so no issues...

I did it 10 years ago, I know I can still do it.

We only live once, as far as we know.

We never know what events in life, be it injury or health issues of oneself, a family member, or a spouse that might limit our activities and lead to anchoring us ashore with limited options. There’s that issue of simply “aging” out as well.

I’ll never regret any of the calculated adventures I’ve allowed myself, and I’ve made a point to tell our children (now adults) that to lead a fulfilling life they’ve got to take some chances (wisely), and you have to “make things happen” and not just let things happen.

i forgot my wading staff a couple yrs ago, and got a camp on a very nice steelhead drift. ended up passing on fishing it, as i would have been a pucker dance all the way. figured, better to do it right the next time.

Yes, 'you only live once'. Live it to the fullest but, ----> I want to continue living to experience more.

The examples I gave in my original post made me appreciate I lived through them vicariously but were way to close to comfort. I got lucky!

As I get older, I get more conservative so I can continue to experience more.

Hindsight is a great thing if you learned from those past experiences.

I went hiking for days without a Garmin in-reach. I waded a river without felt bottoms. I floated a river without a spare oar.

I think about what Alex Honnold has done, and I wonder why I don't have that level of courage.

I have a friend, his goal is to get through life without bruises ,scrapes or scars.
Boring, imo, but that's his level of self preservation.

That's a curious question. I saw a drift rig weekend before last below dayton. I found myself wondering.......
That's crazy!

Although, I could see some utility in drifting down there with a little 1 person raft so you could fish areas surrounded by private property. But even then, that's some tiny water.

Peyton- You have functional amygdala, Alex Honnold does not. You are in the norm there and -don't sell yourself short- it probably means you also have way more friends, that you are a better, kinder, funnier and more empathic friend and would, in general, make for a better hang. Maybe not, but I haven't seen anything to suggest otherwise.

See Honnold's version of hanging out probably means by the pinky off a rock crevice with 2000 feet of void between you and the valley floor....

Just so many places to get trapped, sweepers. This runoff flow is no joke.

Just because you can doesn’t mean that you should. Tom is right, there are many sweepers and I’ve even seen barbed wire fences cross rivers, creeks really, in that area.

That's what I had always seen there. The barbed wire. That was 30+ years ago though, so dunno if that has changed at all.

Still in places. And at least one rope with floats at a backyard swimming hole.

I assume we're talking about Rock Creek in MT! There are Rock Creeks in many states.

Anyway I love it there, I usually go up to the Microburst, about 15 miles up and start there! I need to get back out there this spring or summer. I've watched people float it, even in a canoe and it looks nuts! I've never floated it myself.

Plus i had my first and only rocky mountain oysters there on the I90 side .. 2 of course! They only come in pairs!

Funny I've been thinking about this more as I age. The amount of pure luck or divine intervention over a life spent flying, racing motorcycles then cars, wading, hiking, etc. is just staggering. Sure I'm glad I got off the couch for all of those things, but man, some close ones in there. The question is, was it worth it and if I had the knowledge and wisdom that I do now, would I do them again? Just because I didn't die, should I have done them? In almost every case, no. Some fun times though....

I've had a few close calls, one on the Yakima, floating. I've learned from them and was prepared.. I can laugh at one of them, the other I won't let happen again! What doesn't kill you, does make you stronger... if you learn from it!

Yes, that Rock Creek. It seems most go to Microburst and fish upstream from there. I fish the mouth up to there. Rarely see anyone and it fishes just fine...
