Annual License fees 2026-2027

Yeah, there was a Columbia River (and tribs) endorsement some years back that cost $10. It covered ESA fishery monitoring for places like the Methow steelhead season, when we had a season.
What a great idea! Why not the Skagit right?!?!

So just bought my license online, and selected the mobile option, so it's always on my phone!

Everything went well, downloaded the app on my phone and soon on my other phone!

/RANT START
BUT:
The price went up about $20 with the state taxes! Still cheaper than skiing, golf, whatever...

I'm only annoyed since they are closing access to campgrounds, like Chopaka (see thread!) and bitching that it's because of "budget cuts!"

If it's really due to budget cuts, maybe they can take the extra money they're charging us to mitigate this shit! This comes from a lifelong "Blue" guy..

The amount isn't going to change my lifestyle, but that's not really the point! Anyway, /RANT OVER

Seacrest out!
Question about the online license you bought.
Is it downloaded directly to your phone or to the mobile state app?
Just verifying that you have it on phone even without cell service. I would think the state is smart enough to provide such.

No but there is a field mode that downloads your info when you have a bad cell connection and I did take a screenshot of my licenses. There's also an enforcement view to show a WDFW officer if they need to check your license.

I think someone earlier on in this thread suggested a daily fee for fishing the "S" river. In years (long) past, I fished the Thompson River where we had to pay a daily fee for fishing "classified" waters (I think it was called classified). I'm sure @Salmo_g will remember the proper terminology. I don't know why something like that wouldn't work in this state.

Yes, I thought about the screenshot aspect. Guess I expected something goes directly onto phone, IPhone has the wallet for drivers license, airline tickets etc.
So field mode happens automatically even without opening the app beforehand?

How does it know when to go into field mode? Because it's tracking you!

Don't worry, you're already being tracked by just carrying your phone around!

Sounds like it automatically kicks in when your cell coverage is low or not available. I thought there might be a "download" feature, but I couldn't find one. Although the chances of meeting an enforcement officer in a remote location seems unlikely at best! I've only been "checked" maybe 5 times, in 25 years of fishing in WA and from other threads, they don't have enough officers to keep open many places.. the Spring season on the Skagit / Sauk and recent closures of many campgrounds like Chopaka and Oxbow.. too name a few. So it really doesn't worry me at all! Just my opinion!

Having been involved with the development of regulations during my career, I find this discussion quite interesting. Can anyone explain what the process is to add a new regulation in Washington?

While I was working, there were multiple steps to getting a new regulation on the books. Clearing the Office of Administrative Law was always a big one but the one where good regulations went to die was getting it through law enforcement. Any regulation that was perceived to add to enforcement's work load was always an uphill battle.

In California, there are no daily permits (other than on state lands) and water body specific regulations are called "boutique fisheries". Sadly, California did away with most of those when they attempted to simplify regulations. The official reasoning was to make it easier for anglers to understand but in reality it was to lighten the workload for staff (enforcement, monitoring, environmental review, etc). It's a sad sign of the times.

So...I'll leave it and my license at home so I'm not tracked. Perfect.

"Well, kind sir, I would show you my license but your app killed my fucking battery on the way here.

Just bring your burner phone.. and I really laughed at the battery comment.. only because it's true!! I'll just carry cop food, donuts 🍩, for the officers!

So if you block cell data permission for the app, does it automatically go into “field mode”?
Does it want constant GPS access?

I’m not going to use it this year, maybe next year if it isn’t a total nightmare, and only then with all the permissions locked down.

Carrying some paper in your wallet just ain't that difficult....unless it's packed full of precious pilfered restaurant sugar/creamer packets, ancient expired coupons and a big wad of cash. I've never lost a wallet kept in a zippered pocket yet, and it's been fully immersed in water more than a few times.

I don't carry a wallet. Haven't for a very long time. I use a phone case that keeps my ID/cards and that's it. Can't stand having things in my pocket, so a wallet is a non-starter for me.

Thankfully, Oregon has had electronic licenses for quite a few years now. One less thing I have to carry.

Does the Oregon license download directly on your phone or?

Where do you carry your phone? 😁

If I have a coat, in those pockets. In warmer weather, I deal with pants pockets. Still, one slim thing in my pocket is preferable to having to carry two things, one of which is thicker than a phone.
