Backyard Wildlife

Yeah, bird feeders are a no go here unfortunately. Too many rodents in the neighborhood.

We have had three types of owls visit though. Barred, Barn and Great Horned. Woodpecker species so far include the Northern Flicker, Pileated, Hairy, Downey and the Red Breasted Sapsucker. List to date. From about mid September through today.

Yeah, feeders are a no go here in the Poconos, not because or rats, but because of bears. Still, we have lots of birds about, but they tend to be very skittish here, have not been able to get many good pics. Did see a Bald Eagle soaring overhead the other day (gone by the time I got the camera out) - first sighting over our place since moving here 1.75 years ago.

Me too (winter will be over)!! Ducks have been about through the winter, not as many or as frequently as last winter, but have seen the Mallards and Black ducks:

I started my career in the Owens Valley - such a beautiful part of the world. Great horned owls are vicious predators. I once had one make a low pass on my weenie dog puppy. Fortunately, I walked her out into the backyard and was standing right near her when it happened or she might have ended up in an owl casting like that kitty.

Not the best pictures but I finally caught it whatever it is.
It burrowed around my yard all last summer and fall and would occasionally leave a good sized mound of dirt here and there.
I located the tunnels and tried pellets a number of times but finally resorted to traps.
For size reference, that's an 8"x8" block. The second picture shows the big brown teeth and long claws.

Now the big question is is there more than one?
