Puget Sound

Hit the sound with @Kfish this morning for a shortish outing. It was a balmy 27 degrees when we launched at 7:15 this morning, at least according to my vehicle. I’m not sure how accurate that is. Regardless, it wasn’t t-shirt weather. It was much nicer when we got back to the ramp a little after 12.

Found a good number of fish in a number of spots. One cool thing we have not seen the last few years but did today, was lots of rezzies in a bunch of different spots. We caught both rezzies and SRC in every spot we found fish including some new ones. Overall, hooked 15-20, landed a 13-14 I imagine. The old shrimp fly got it done though I did hook a couple on a small flashy clousers. Another fun winter day on the sound.

Cold and intermittently foggy morning.

Fly of choice.

Some fish from the outing. No large SRC for me. Lou got the best one of the day I think. All mine were smallish to average. Some chunky rezzies too.

We covered a lot of water this morning, didn’t spend too much time at any spots despite them being proven spots. Found a bunch of fish all over a wide variety of areas, the cool thing was how previous “duds” areas really produced this morning.

I started with a spoon fly, it did catch fish but hookup rates were abysmal due to the size and shape of the spoon, snagging it on a log was a good excuse as any to change to a shrimp so I could catch up to @jasmillo who was roping them left and right.

Good day on @jasmillo boat today, we found a good number of fish and had multiple doubles. We’ve seen more pods of rezzies out there compared to recent years past which is hopefully a good sign for salmon fishing later this year.
Flatwings got most of the fish early on and the fry pattern got it done the second half.

Headed south today. Got some small cutts and lost one jumbo. The rezzies are starting to plump up and get some shoulders.
Once they grow a few more inches and I’ll be releasing a few into the frying pan.
I used a flashy clouser all day.

It’s been a number of years since I have seen rezzies in the variety of places we are finding them this winter. They really can make an ok day a really good one which is nice this time of year. It was a fun morning for sure. Fished a bunch of new spots. All seemed very promising but most were duds, though the tides did not help. A couple were really good. Always nice to stick a pin in a couple more spots on the old map.

Shrimp and flashy clouser got all my fish today. This one in particular.

Fished on @jasmillo boat today which was a good choice due to some chops out there. Whaler breezed through the chops but getting a face full of rain kind of hurt, like little bbs 🤣

Fishing was really good at some spots while the honey hole from last weekend turned out to be a dud. Goes to show how unpredictable these little beasts are.

Some doubles to be had, a triple even. Jason tosses his fly out and quickly wrangled in the third while I was taking photo of the double.

Very good day but also very wet and cold.

I fished the Narrows a ton 20 years ago. It was the place I learned how to fly fish fast for saltwater salmon. At first there was only the old bridge. Then I watched every stage of the new bridge being built. In 2007 the constructions workers up on the cables and new decking used to yell down to me when they saw me hooking rezzies nearly every cast. Some years the sandlance really stack onto that beach. Fun times!

Got to the beach a little before sunrise. There was a decent wind pushing some nice waves into the beach. The water was still clear-ish though so I got cooking. Luckily the wind tapered off and was replaced with rain.
Rezzies pounced on me right away, some were little chunks with shoulders. What a pleasant surprise. Zero cutts. Got back to the car and the coffee I left behind was still hot. What more can you ask for?

Arrived at my favorite beach around 10:45 this morning. My Kfish clouser unfortunately was ignored by the jumpers. Didn't have any luck until I tied on my shrimpy muddler, which got plenty of attention. One scratched up beauty to the net and more than I'd like to admit we're lost... I've got to stop using cheap hooks purchased from aliexpress

Stayed local today. Wind was stronger than forecast. Glad I’m a righty. Got my first tube snake post spawn cutt of the year. Looks like it had ear surgery as well.
