I read an interesting essay last night by the CEO of Anthropic (one of the AI development companies).

Here's the link:

And here's an excerpt:

"In my essay Machines of Loving Grace, I tried to lay out the dream of a civilization that had made it through to adulthood, where the risks had been addressed and powerful AI was applied with skill and compassion to raise the quality of life for everyone. I suggested that AI could contribute to enormous advances in biology, neuroscience, economic development, global peace, and work and meaning. I felt it was important to give people something inspiring to fight for, a task at which both AI accelerationists and AI safety advocates seemed—oddly—to have failed. But in this current essay, I want to confront the rite of passage itself: to map out the risks that we are about to face and try to begin making a battle plan to defeat them. I believe deeply in our ability to prevail, in humanity’s spirit and its nobility, but we must face the situation squarely and without illusions."

first ripple from the tsunami on the horizon?

Hyundai Motor Group plans to mass-produce humanoid robots in Georgia, and put them to work helping real humans build cars in the same factory.
Why it matters: Hyundai, through its Boston Dynamics subsidiary, is already a leader in robotics — it now says it is ready to take humanoids from the lab to the factory floor, signaling a new phase in the AI revolution.

Driving the news: The South Korea-based industrial conglomerate, whose car brands include Hyundai, Kia and Genesis, unveiled a sweeping AI robotics strategy on Monday at CES in Las Vegas.
The roadmap includes a plan to manufacture 30,000 Atlas humanoid robots a year by 2028 at its sprawling high-tech "Metaplant" near Savannah and then integrate them into its factories and warehouses worldwide.
They'll be deployed gradually, beginning in 2028 at the Savannah plant, where Hyundai builds electric and hybrid vehicles like the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 9.
  • At first, they'll work on tasks with proven safety and quality benefits, such as parts sequencing. By 2030, Atlas robots will be trained to assemble vehicle components.
  • Over time, they'll take on more complex jobs that involve repetitive motions and heavy loads — making work safer and less taxing for factory employees, the company said.
The big picture: Boston Dynamics is one of several companies using AI to develop humanoids that can move autonomously and learn tasks by modeling human behavior.
Tesla plans to reveal the latest version of its Optimus robot in February or March, with production slated to begin by the end of 2026, CEO Elon Musk told investors in October.
Mercedes-Benz bought a stake in robotics firm Apptronik, and is testing its robots in a couple of its German factories.
  • BMW has been testing Figure AI's humanoid robots at its Spartanburg, South Carolina, factory, but hasn't said whether it will integrate them into its production lines.
  • Unitree, which is headed for an IPO later this year, leads a group of Chinese companies also working on humanoids.
Context: Hyundai's CES announcement adds details to a previously announced plan to invest up to $26 billion in the U.S., including a new steel plant in Louisiana and expanded vehicle production in Georgia.
  • The Savannah manufacturing campus (which made headlines in September for an ICE raid at a related battery joint venture) will be home to a new robot training facility opening this year.

Zoom out: Affiliates from across the Hyundai Group empire are supporting the effort, which is also backed by partnerships with leading AI companies such as Google DeepMind and NVIDIA.
  • Hyundai's bet is that combining Boston Dynamics' AI robotics expertise with its own global scale and manufacturing capabilities will provide a powerful edge over competitors when it comes to mass producing humanoid robots.
Where it stands: The Hyundai Group is already using Boston Dynamics robots in industrial settings to enhance safety and improve efficiency.
  • Spot, the quadruped robot dog, performs data collection and safety monitoring in various industrial sites, including Savannah.
  • Stretch, the warehouse robot, has unloaded more than 20 million boxes globally since its launch in 2023, the company says.

Boston Dynamics started as a independent company. In 2013 it was acquired by Google. If was then sold to SoftBank in 2017.

I do remember when Google bought Boston Dynamics since it was basically funded and operated as a research firm for DOD. When Google bought it, their employees wanted to terminate all business with DOD. That didn't work well with DOD, and I am not sure if that is why it was sold to SoftBank.

But Google employees definitely wanted NOTHING to do with having robots defend the US. Most Google employees didn't want ANYONE defending the US. I believe Corporate felt slightly different.

The status today??? From Google AI.....

Hyundai Motor Group
owns a controlling interest in Boston Dynamics, having acquired an 80% stake in the robotics firm in June 2021 for approximately $1.1 billion. The remaining 20% stake is held by SoftBank. While operating as an independent entity, Boston Dynamics leverages Hyundai's manufacturing capabilities to accelerate development.

Of all countries, South Korea is probably as good as it gets with foreign companies that like the US.

Do you think we have too few companies these days? Do the Oligarchs control everything??

I agree ---> The Resistance should NOT be against AI. It has and will have great and positive influences on society as a whole.

The Resistance should be against AI being deployed without any guardrails which includes against the Oligarchs.

God bless America and capitalism.

This land is your land.

It’s that time to look at, try hearing aids again. I noticed this time around the manufacturers are using enhanced AI to make hearing in noisy environments better.
I was fitted with the Phonak Audeo Infinio Sphere I90 from the VA last June. They are amazing compared to 4 previous hearing aids I have received since 2000. And there is a recent update to the Phonak Audeo Ultra Sphere I90 that the buzz says is as big a step forward in noise reduction filtering as these are to my last pair. I think the VA is supposed to acquire the software to do the update to existing Infineo patients they have fitted to the Ultra version after May 1, 2026.

When I took economics in the early 70's, we covered oligarchs and their effect on economic systems. Didn't spend much time on them, since at that time they were few and far in between.

Today it is a different story.

Though oligarchs are usually mentioned as "Russian oligarchs" the situation in the US is just as bad as it is in Russia. I don't think most Americans realize how FEW MEGA corporations there are in America today.

All economic systems have the "basis" to be successful. The reason that capitalism is so successful is that it matches human nature.

Other economic systems have the potential to be successful, but first they need to change human nature. I truly believe, that is why well over 200 million people were killed by the last failed economic experiment on earth. They truly believed that eliminating the "protesting" gene pool would allow them to meet their goal.

I lived in Berkeley for almost a decade which was a total disaster, with lot of talk and little action. I then moved to the Peoples Republic of Chelan County. It works, in Chelan County!!! Unfortunately, you need conservative folks to run the County to make a Peoples Republic successful!!!

Yep, Chelan County controls the means of production through ownership of their dams, co-ops in the fruit industry, co-ops in medicine, even the local "country club" is a non-profit co-op. When I moved here in 1985, everything was also locally owned. After 40 years, everything is owned by out of area corporations. Today our local media is owned by Bell Canada and a out-of-state corporation which does not bode well for the future.

God did bless America, by putting two oceans between us and the rest of world. The events of 1776, were earth shattering. The most revolutionary doctrine in the history of man.

All we have to do is not screw it up.

The key is to have plenty of competition in the realm of ideas and business. The internet led to a concentration of power in the hands of a few brats. AI has the same potential to concentrate power within a society.

America is a success because it has avoided that concentration of thought and resources.

AI has the potential to concentrate power, or diffuse throughout society.

Jefferson thought that the US should stay a "small farmer society" as in his mind that was the only way to maintain a Republic.

We are not a nation of farmers anymore. But we do have the potential to remain a nation where ideas come up from "small" resources.

I've read quite a bit of history, but I think I missed this event.

I think he's referring to the beanie baby craze of the '80s and there had to be way more than 200 million.
I think he may be referring to communism, but 200 million might be a stretch, so that does leave the Beanie Baby theory, which I favor.

If they are manufactured with both U.S. and imported parts, will these robots be issued U.S. citizenship papers? Can robots of mixed parts heritage have birthright citizenship? If they are labeled undocumented immigrant robots, then I fear another major ICE raid in Georgia. Would undocumented robots be deported to S. Korea or CECOT? Inquiring minds need to know!

It is a stretch unless you group all of the communist countries with their policies together. Chinas Great Leap Forward 1959-1961 was estimated deaths of 15-55 million. It’s calculated Russia lost 100 million deaths by 1991.

If they are created here even with mixed parts, I would think birthright citizenship applies.

Fully deploying robotics within the industrial and agricultural sectors and fully deploying AI within the engineering, financial, and analytical sectors solves for the problem of needing human worker inputs to sustain the economy. Once that’s taken care of, we can proceed with controlled demolition of society and rapid deletion of its fleshy constituents.

Or at least this is Elon’s and Thiel’s wet dream. As @509 says, worry less about AI and more about oligarchs.

Heck with jobs!!!! I don't need to work. PER THE TECH LEADERS!!! These days they're saying yaint gonna need a job!! I'm looking to be on the FOREFRUNT of these societal Advantages. PIONEERING the No Job Movement!!! Give me money so that I can pioneer the No Job Movement.

It's the same ecosystem as every global corporation has a billionaire(s) at the top of it's food chain wanting to maximize revenue by reducing operating costs, and AI/robotic job displacement are the tools they are employing to do so.
The myopia of this strategy, however, is that millions of lost jobs =millions of lost customers = diminished corporate revenues.
Eat the rich.
