NFR Alcohol going out of style

Non-fishing related
Those are pretty high end wines. Still waiting for my first Walla Walla red at Grocery Outlets. Did find one Horse Heaven Hills winery. It was good.

For a long, long time the Federal tax code was a "gift" to the wine industry. If you were wealthy, it made sense to plant a vineyard since you had lots of taxpayer money to help with your vanity farm.

Though judging from the price of wine dropping it seems like it might be more of a demand thing.

Do you know if there were any changes with the recent tax bill??
I don't have any info on tax changes.

My wife likes Athletic Lite NA, mine is Deschutes Brewing Black Butte NA
We used to enjoy a glass or two of de-stress wine during the evening working years, both of us gave it up when we retired at 60 and went onto the fourth quarter playbook - alcohol free, moderate diet, plenty of exercise.
Have/had friends and family who are alcoholics, old age is not kind to them if they make it that far.

When I quit drinking (ten years, three months and twenty one days ago, but whose counting?),

Me, 12 years come March 21 2024...
I've managed to string a few days together also. Life's a lot better. I sleep OK, just out around 730 and up really early. Inherented that from my dad too.

As someone who has been wanting/needing to cut back, this is a very encouraging thread.

My sleep, and energy are sooo much better when I don’t drink. Also, getting up to pee at night.

Part of my challenge is a lot of what I do, alcohol is part of it. And it’s hard for me to be where people are drinking and not partake.

I have cut back recently on the beer. I really like beer. I really like wine too. I don't drink hard A. Cutting back to me means no beer on the weekdays at this point. I feel pretty much the same. My sleep is still fucked. I have lost weight though and I am saving money for sure.

It's fairly normal for people to cut back or stop drinking as they age. The number of older people here who have quit or have cut back seems rather normal.

I think that the reasons that Gen Z drinks far less has a lot more to do with how they socialize. I have 2 gen Z kids. Both drink some but neither drink a lot. I think that they were raised in an environment where making mistakes had a larger impact on them. Alchohol reduces inhibitions and that is dangerous in an electronic world. I have noticed is how quick the generation is to shame or judge people by their words and actions. I think this is a problematic symptom of having such a large part of their life being lived through the phone screen and living in such a politically and socially polarized country. There are all those cameras too. I shutter to think of the photos and videos that could have been taken of me when I was a younger man.

The combination of having all of your actions potentially being documented and the dominant communication medium being instantly judgemental should influence them to drink a lot less.

Still in style for me. I drink wine daily, probably about 3 or 4 glasses. When it comes out of a box it's harder to keep track. It starts with dinner and continues into evening TV viewing. It may not be a lot, but it's enough that I usually save the pricier bottles for a special dinner.

I like some beer in the warmer months, mid to late spring until the cooler weather of fall. A beer with lunch tastes good. I don't drink much hard liquor, but learned a couple summers ago that an afternoon gin & tonic tastes good. I have a shot of whiskey once in a while. I bought a real nice bottle of expensive tequilla last summer while passing through Reno that I haven't opened yet. That bottle gets cracked on Super Bowl Sunday.

I never could handle the bar and tavern scene because the tobacco smoke reeked so bad. My eyes and lungs just wouldn't have it. I don't think I'm an alcoholic cuz when I have occasion to take a break, I don't notice any ill effects. I try to keep it in check because my father and uncle were alcoholics. One of the reasons no one's ever accused me of being "Mr. Excitement" is because nearly every thing I do is in moderation. Except moderation.

What I’ve gathered in my almost 70 years is anyone that drinks is some form of alcoholic. Whether a glass or two of wine with a fine meal, beers with the boys, or to a hardcore black out drunk. When I was going to AA, I wanted to tell them I’m the guy that could drink one beer and be done….I know they’d say I was in denial. Now I’d kinda like to go back to a meeting and say I’d like you to meet that person….me!
I agree that as we get older, everything changes. No need to hang out at the bars, party hardy, it’s just tougher to recuperate. Good sleep for me isn’t affected by drinking, more like all the aches and pains I’ve accumulated over the years. I’ll end by saying drinking Coors light still tastes like beer, pees like beer but still less than $1.00 a can! The last time I saw that price was in the early 70’s at a keg’r! $1.00 for a red plastic cup and a foamy Brew 66! Ahhh….the good ol days.

Haven't had a bit of alcohol in 7 months, and even before that I'd cut way back from my prime drinking years. Just didn't make me feel all that good as I aged (now 74), probably because old farts don't metabolize alcohol as well as younger folks. Really had no withdrawal impacts, and it was especially easy because my wife of 56 years rarely ever drank any type of alcoholic beverages. Being retired for a few years also gave me incredible relief from a very stressful job!

great thread.. On a similar topic I'm looking to roll back sugar intake too. Might be worthy of another thread though.
I might not be able to handle my liquor, but man I LOVE candy and ice cream. As cursed as I may be as a drunk I'm blessed that I can eat anything and stay 155#. Doesn't seem to mess up my blood work either.
My wife's on no salt for her blood pressure, so we're doing that. Except I gotta have some Johnny's.

Funny, I haven't had ice cream since the holidays, and then only once...and not much either. Before that it was last Summer sometime.
My name is Mossback, and I'm an IceCreamaholic.

Sparkling mineral water on tap! I'd put it somewhere around Topo Chico as far as taste. I have a mineral/salts mixture I add to the keg before filling it up and carbonating. Pencils out to about $0.20 per gallon. This scratches that "I just want a bitter, fizzy beverage" itch.

Dru Bru has it as well! They add flavor and its free. Delicious!

It's the four letter word...WEED.
Most young people would rather do that than alcohol. And it's legal so no different in their mind. I know young guys that are college athletes and they can smoke and not feel bad the next day whereas if they had the same effect from drinking they would be hurting.
It's probably no more expensive these days either.
On the party scale, my young (24-28) fishing buddies tell me way more young people are doing shrooms and just as many, often the Greek row types, are doing cocaine. They literally have testers. You can buy testers for pretty cheap that are better than the DEA had just a few years ago.
Cocaine is the most pure it's ever been. I know a kid that would rather start the party with some smoke and see how it goes. If it's a rager then it's coke time. He said he's rarely hung over and only does the pure stuff.
Obviously there's issues here, and frats boys still drink a lot, but from what he was saying it's way less than "back in the day."

I know weed is legal and supposedly not physically addictive, but rather mentally addictive. Not sure.. all I know is I watched one of my best friends become a "pot head". He was a telecom engineer, like me, and I saw him stop learning. I also saw him look for his pipe for about an hour. By the end of that hour his hands were shaking like crazy.
Guess we'll see what ends being better in the end. Hopefully Gen Z is just doing less of everything and eats better than we did. I think one of their biggest issues is these stupid energy drinks. Every coffee stand now has 15 different "energy" drinks. That stuff can't be good for you.
Man, I need a PBR after typing all that. 😁

Again, as someone in the restaurant industry, cocaine has absolutely been more actually cocaine than it currently is. However the meth being sold as cocaine? Never better.
