NFR Alcohol going out of style

Non-fishing related
Way back in a forest economics class, we students were sitting around complaining about not having "enough disposable income".

Forestry students between fire money, and fairly good paying summer jobs working for the natural resource agencies and private companies had a pretty good "disposable income" even with working three months and going to school for nine.

He looked at us and said "Right now, you have the highest disposable income that you will have for decades".

NOBODY believed him. But he was right.

As soon as we graduated we bought trucks, homes, and then had children. Children, now there is a "disposable income" sink hole!!!

Want disposable income?? Don't buy new vehicles. Don't buy a expensive home, buy a shack instead. And whatever you do, don't pass your DNA on to future generations. If you must couple up, make sure your partner doesn't spend money but has a decent income.

I have a friend that actually did that. He has an incredible disposable income. He literally, can afford to do anything he wants and
does.

Everybody thinks he is poor because he drives a beater vehicle and lives in a simple shack.

Oh and whatever you do......don't pass on your DNA. That is free at the moment and feels good, but the bills start coming in nine months later and do not quit for three decades or more.

That said. In my 20's I bought the best wines. They were fairly cheap. My special graduate school wine for important occasions was about $5. Probably 20 in current dollars, but unfortunately it sells for $200 a bottle these days for current vintage.

The good news is that when you get old your disposable income goes up.

Or as a good friend said........"Vladimir, I have more money than time".
Valid points…now add in that the dollar ain’t worth jack. Buying power is way down. Bad time to be in th hospitality biz

I'm taking 10 days off of alcohol to see if it will help my sleeping. I typically have about 6 drinks a week and don't like to get drunk. But, theres' some information about 'light' drinking interrupting sleep patterns. I love beer and whiskey, but sleep is more important to me.
I drink lightly and infrequently. I'd guess I average about one beer a month and four glasses of wine. I almost always have it with the evening meal though sometimes I'll have a beer on a a summer day.

I definitely notice my sleep is affected after having a beer or glass of wine the night before.

enjoying a glass of good Willamette Valley wine as I type...it's excellent! 🍷

Enjoying a malbec from Argentina.

Delicious!

Those that read my posts saw I quit for 111 days, attended AA meetings 5 days a week to show my X to be wife she/us was way more important than drinking. Drinking wasn’t the only reason for our demise but it didn’t help either. But I’ve done lots of stupid shit sober…so I can’t totally blame it on alcohol. After listening to other’s shares at AA meetings, I am glad I got my partying done in the past. But now officially by myself, I’m drinking even more moderately. Watching the Seahawks wasn’t the same drinking water or lemonade….so a couple of beers at home I feel I’m not hurting anyone. And I’ve always fished better with a cold one or two…. I like my Crown and Coors! Anything in moderation. My .02

Here in the Walla Walla Valley overall wine sales and wine tourism are down significantly. Sales are off like 20+% and grapes grown are down 50% in some vineyards from what I've read.
The whole time I was surveying it was growth. Made a lot of $$$ surveying boundaries, staking vineyards, buildings and other appurtinances every year. Always wondered where the ceiling was.

Well i and my whisk(e)y and whine friends make up for youse guys! Actually not much longer for me. I won't say I'll never drink again, but for the foreseeable future its NA and cocktails! It needs to happen for me!

I've found soon many awesome options! Great NA beer and canned options! Amazing mocktails.. even NA whiskey but the reviews say it sucks. NA gin though is real! Ginesence is made by John Howies Wildwood Distillery in Bothell and Seattle! Some other are good!

Ill bring some down to the Shop & Swap!

I quit drinking in June of 2023. I still sleep like crap, but way better than when I was drinking. I also dropped 40 lbs.
Working from home during the pandemic was great not having to go into the office, but lunch beers became routine after my daily walks. I love a good ice cold beer and may drink one in the future now and then, but I really haven’t missed drinking over the past 2.5 years. It definitely save some $$$$ as well.

When I was 21, used to like those Miller stubbies. Later, being that I worked downwind from Blitz-Weinhard and smelling the mash, never touched a beer, ever! I cannot remember when the last time alcohol touched my lips, it has been that long ago.

Those are pretty high end wines. Still waiting for my first Walla Walla red at Grocery Outlets. Did find one Horse Heaven Hills winery. It was good.

For a long, long time the Federal tax code was a "gift" to the wine industry. If you were wealthy, it made sense to plant a vineyard since you had lots of taxpayer money to help with your vanity farm.

Though judging from the price of wine dropping it seems like it might be more of a demand thing.

Do you know if there were any changes with the recent tax bill??

As someone who needs his sleep, alcohol interferes hugely. I started monitoring my sleep as my Apple watch has a built in program measuring deep sleep, REM sleep and time awake. So I started by cutting back on drinking and immediately got more quality sleep. I eventually quit almost completely and for the first time since I don't know when I slept 7 hours solid without waking during the night. I am done with wanting a daily drink, but still have a glass of wine on the holidays and birthdays. And that single glass of Chablis still f**ks up my sleep.

When I quit drinking (ten years, three months and twenty one days ago, but who is counting?), I would have a ginger beer (NA) daily. One day I read the label and was freaking shocked at the sugar content in a 12 oz bottle of ginger beer so I quit that sh-- too. I dropped 25 pounds in a couple months. As Brian @Stonedfish suggests, there's $$$ savings as well.

I'm surprised how many of you have gone completely dry. Very encouraging. I could definitely use a dry spell, but not before the Super Bowl and February Thailand trip. I'm thinking a dry March and April would be a great break to reset...maybe it'll end up being longer...I've done a few 6 months dry in the last 5 years.

I moved back here about 10 years ago and one of the first things I noticed was how much drinking was a part of the culture here in the PNW compared to other places I lived in the Mid-Atlantic, Texas, and especially Hawaii. Maybe just my family and friends here, but it seems like drinking is much more centric to events here compared to elsewhere.

Sparkling mineral water on tap! I'd put it somewhere around Topo Chico as far as taste. I have a mineral/salts mixture I add to the keg before filling it up and carbonating. Pencils out to about $0.20 per gallon. This scratches that "I just want a bitter, fizzy beverage" itch.
