NFR Superb Owl 2026: Seahawks vs Patriots (official thread)

Non-fishing related
The very type of person that makes it to this level is going to have some kind of screw loose.

My dad and his younger brother were both athletes in high school and college…and highly competitive both on and off the field. My dad set numerous track & field records at Brockton High School, only to have his younger brother break all of them. I remember once as a 12 yo kid getting asked to leave a bowling ally after my dad and my uncle were having a spirited impromptu shot put competition with 16lb bowling balls…that lane needed to have a lot of boards replaced…

There's also an argument to be made that the taunting penalties are really dumb (and unevenly enforced). Are players hurting other player's feelings? Unless they are dropping slurs or getting personal about families and whatnot, I have a hard time caring. Yes, rules are rules even if they are stupid ones, and every one of these guys is paid more than enough to know that. No excuses for Woolen.

But in a larger sense, the league having the same level of penalty for "mean words" as they do for a dangerous late hit is stupid. Kinda like the flags they used to throw for using the ball as a prop in TD celebrations. Though at least those don't take the TD off the board.
It is pretty dumb that words come with the same penalty yardage as actual sticks and stones.

This is less of a disagreement than an observation/question - was the flag on Woolen triggered by him crossing the out of bounds plane and being on LA’s sideline? Looked like the ref kept his powder dry until Woolen crossed onto the white, and then he had no choice but to flag. Seems like they were mostly “letting them play.”

I told Mrs. Salmo after the game that if I were the Coach or GM, I'd fine Woollen (not knowing how much he makes, something like $20 or 40K) and that next time it happens, he's off the team. A lot of fouls are darn hard to avoid. Unsportsmanlike Conduct is probably the most avoidable of any and should carry severe consequences. Woollen really hurt the team with that stupid move and essentially gave the Rams a touchdown.
I agree with you…….”One aw shit wipes out a thousand atta boys!” Free agent after this year…….and there were waaaaay more than one!

The Official NFL Franchise of PNWFlyfishing.com ™️ , your Seattle Seahawks are headed to the Superb Owl.
:)

He literally gifted them a touchdown. First on the very avoidable penalty after the 4th down stop while the punt unit was headed out, then on getting torched for the subsequent TD.
Plus don't forget the "dropped interception" that preceded. Could argue Nacua still had one hand on it, but...

And really, while he kept whining on the sideline, we stayed in the hole momentum wise until the gift from LA. Their decision to go for it on 4th down in the red zone (and fail) put us mentally back in the driver's seat. Had they taken the 3, that second score would have kept us playing scared with a 1 pt lead and time left for anything.

Beyond that, the 11 year road to get back here seems long, but considering the odds of a NE rematch in the SB it happened pretty fast.

I realized yesterday that I have lived in parts of six decades. The Patriots have made the superbowl in five of them. Only in the 1970's was I alive when they did not make a superbowl for the entire decade. They have made the superbowl in the following years; 1986,1997,2002,2004,2005,2008,2012,2015,2017,2018,2019,2025. They are 6-5 in Superbowl games.

As NFL fans go, Patriot fans are quite fortunate.

I was looking at the Seahawks roster/ team stats this morning. That team is stacked. Look at all the starpower. JSN, Walker, Darnold, Leonard Williams, Witherspoon, Earnest Jones III. They score 28 a game. They give up just 18 a game. Thaey are teh number 1 scoring defense. You can't run on them and it's hard to pass too. They turn you over (15 int's). They return kicks. There just isn't a weakness on this Seahawk team.

They punted 21 times less than their oponents (52-73). They out pass their competition. They outrun their competition. They are sound in the kicking game. They don't get penalized. They have the hottest young coach in the NFL. They have it all and they have earned it all.

My beloved Patsies can barely get out of their own way. They put up 10 total points yesterday. The Pats have gotten lucky all year. They were lucky that Nix got hurt. They were lucky that Stroud played so poorly. They were lucky that the Charger O-line was banged up. All year they had a weak schedule. Even in the playoffs they did not have to face any of the teams with a great QB. No Ravens, No Bills, No Bengals. They just bear Herbert, who has a poor playoff record. Stroud played like he was soiling himself, and Stidham is a back up. How can the Patriots possibly compete against Darnold? Darnold looks like Payton Manning circa 2009 right now. The Pats have just been lucky. It seems like everything has just fallen into their laps. I don't know how the Patriots could possibly compete with a complete team like the Seahawks.

What a complete mismatch.
@charles sullivan - you appear to be deploying a possum strategy on behalf of the Pats and I respect ✊ it. Your hyping of the Hawks looks like “the poisoned kiss” and in order to ward it off, a counter seems warranted by someone rooting for the Hawks…

The Pats have really strong special teams. They put up some of the most explosive plays in the league. They have two great RBs, both with fresh legs. Their WRs are solid +. Their defense is stout and their interior pass rush and disruption will likely present some real problems for the Hawks and Darnold (our interior line play is……let’s just say not elite in spots though I wish it were).

Pats have a strong offensive line (with possible exception of one of the tackles who seems kinda inconsistent).

They have an MVP caliber QB who is a flat out baller and - more worryingly - he’s one of the best rushing QBs in the game. That QB style seems to give our defensive scheme problems. I don’t know the Hawks stats in terms of defense vs. QB rushing, but my guess is it is somewhat of a weak point relative to our other areas.

Great coach, really good (albeit kinda douche-y seeming) offensive coordinator. They just beat two excellent teams - both of which I believe had top 7 defenses in the league.

Ok their owner is a turd IMO, but that aside the Pats are for real. They should be favored. Returning poisoned kiss….now. :)

Kidding aside wishing you luck. I’m pulling for the Seahawks (because I love freedom! ‘Merica! West Coast!) but I respect your fandom.

Football is the ultimate Made for TV sport...
While in person is cool and all, watching at home, on my couch (regret not buying a new one this season, will rectify before next season), with reasonably priced snacks of my choosing is definitely my preference.

oh I'm a huge fan of watching at home. It's just kinda neat to "be there" when some of the big games happen. It's an experience that's so different from watching at home that I have a hard time comparing it.

I'm old now, and so the whole game day ordeal I used to dig, leaving early, parking, crowds, overpriced food and drink, traffic, obnoxious fans doesn't appeal to me anymore.
Been to plenty of games, never a Superb Owl, but I'm fine with not going in person these days.
Plus I'd need a go fund me for a 10 large ticket, and still probably would not go.
😆

I listened to a podcast interview with the author of this book recently.
Football by Chuck Klosterman.
Sounds pretty interesting. He makes the argument that football is basically the only element of American "monoculture" left. It's about the only thing most every American can relate to each other about in some way. And he compared going to football games in person to the communal experience people get from going to church, and thinks that has to be a big part of why people like going to football games, since it clearly is not a better way to understand what exactly is happening in the game.
Here's the podcast in case you're interested. https://www.iheart.com/podcast/358-...868372/episode/america-is-football-319239866/

The SEAHAWKS are comin in BIG POWER STYLE!!! coming in doing the Big Power Plays to DOMINATE the scebe!!! Several guys comin in at 450 pounds plus!!! If you dont have 450 pounders on the Front Line then you can't compete in this league!

I think the wettest and coldest I've ever been is sitting in the wind and rain in the student section of Husky stadium on a loosing afternoon. I love TV at home. Gas fireplace, snacks, potty.

Super nice reverse jinx work.

Only been to a handful of 'Hawks games but two stand out as a couple of the most memorable moments of my life.

Don't recall the year, but it was one of the 'Raider Hater' games in the Kingdome. It was so loud I was actually fearing that the roof might come down.

Second was the 2014 Championship game, with Sherman's tip happening right in front of us.

Not sure why I don't go to more games. Cost prolly.
