I was looking at the Seahawks roster/ team stats this morning. That team is stacked. Look at all the starpower. JSN, Walker, Darnold, Leonard Williams, Witherspoon, Earnest Jones III. They score 28 a game. They give up just 18 a game. Thaey are teh number 1 scoring defense. You can't run on them and it's hard to pass too. They turn you over (15 int's). They return kicks. There just isn't a weakness on this Seahawk team.
They punted 21 times less than their oponents (52-73). They out pass their competition. They outrun their competition. They are sound in the kicking game. They don't get penalized. They have the hottest young coach in the NFL. They have it all and they have earned it all.
My beloved Patsies can barely get out of their own way. They put up 10 total points yesterday. The Pats have gotten lucky all year. They were lucky that Nix got hurt. They were lucky that Stroud played so poorly. They were lucky that the Charger O-line was banged up. All year they had a weak schedule. Even in the playoffs they did not have to face any of the teams with a great QB. No Ravens, No Bills, No Bengals. They just bear Herbert, who has a poor playoff record. Stroud played like he was soiling himself, and Stidham is a back up. How can the Patriots possibly compete against Darnold? Darnold looks like Payton Manning circa 2009 right now. The Pats have just been lucky. It seems like everything has just fallen into their laps. I don't know how the Patriots could possibly compete with a complete team like the Seahawks.
What a complete mismatch.

But they still fell ass backwards in to the Superb Owl! Not an easy thing to do even if it's because of a long list of happenstances.
It’s a bummer Charbs got hurt and won’t get to play in a Super Bowl he helped his team get to. That said, I am a way bigger fan of K9’s running style and the dimension that adds to our offense. He’ll go into the game well-rested thanks to Charbs splitting reps until the NFC championship and is going to be running with a chip on his shoulder. K9 is my pick for Super Bowl MVP (I hope I didn’t jinx him).

Hawks are a complete team. NE is not. Hawks by 13.
And for the same reasons that Earl Thomas, Percy Harvin and DK Metcalf had to go, Riq Woolen has to go in the offseason. I understand “the heat of the moment”, but if you can’t control yourself enough to prevent serious damage to your team, you gotta go. It will likely happen again.

Ehhhh, how many of those names would have been called "star power" before the season? JSN for sure, Williams for those who know, maybe stat heads making a case for someone like Spoon or Love. But Darnold? K9? Jones III? They didn't get national respect or the star label. Especially before this season. Heck, the story around Darnold was him being a bust given his third overall draft position. Even after his strong year with MIN, all anyone heard was that he choked in the playoffs.
Like I mentioned before, that's the kinda fun thing about this SB. Especially compared to the last SEA/NE, one. These are young teams with few superstars to take over the narratives.
That's not to say that I don't agree that the Hawks stack up better than the Pats in the talent department. I just think neither team was thought about very highly by outside fans or media.
I wonder if Woolen appreciates just how close he came to being one of the “those players” - that elite class of players who history remembers only for their biggest screw-ups. Games come down to more than one play, blah blah blah, but if the Seahawks had lost, the entire fan base was going to put that 100% on his shoulders and never, ever forget.
One member of our speafishing group in Hawaii was the original Marlboro Man in commercials.which was funny since he was French and spoke with a heavy French accent…

I suspect he gets it and feels extremely lucky.
He's a fairly young guy playing in the biggest game of his career. Made a mistake, and not even a mistake with his play (until the next snap, anyway). But a silly mistake after the whistle. Just got too excited and acted stupid. I suspect we all have some version of a story like that in our own smaller ways. Lord knows I don't want to be defined by my worst decision made in the heat of the moment. If we're lucky, no harm comes from it but some embarrassment and a good dressing down by our friends/bosses/etc.
How he handles it going forward is going to be the real test. Learning lesson that makes him a better player? Or will he DK it and be one of those "Great talent, but hurts his team with hothead decisions" kind of guys.

I told Mrs. Salmo after the game that if I were the Coach or GM, I'd fine Woollen (not knowing how much he makes, something like $20 or 40K) and that next time it happens, he's off the team. A lot of fouls are darn hard to avoid. Unsportsmanlike Conduct is probably the most avoidable of any and should carry severe consequences. Woollen really hurt the team with that stupid move and essentially gave the Rams a touchdown.
He literally gifted them a touchdown. First on the very avoidable penalty after the 4th down stop while the punt unit was headed out, then on getting torched for the subsequent TD.

Youthful indiscretion? Getting tangled up after a play and throwing a punch or calling someone a naughty name? Understandable. Running down an opposing sideline after a play, disregarding an umps gentle “OK move on now”….. that’s different. That is a sustained loss of control, not a heat of the moment thing, which I bet carried over to the next play when he got torched by Nacua. Don’t forget that Woolen was benched earlier this season for stupid penalties and performance issues, and then in week 7 came back positively. Pump him up and get him ready for the Super Bowl, we need him.
I have never met this young man. I strongly believe in redemption. I also believe in observing patterns, and this young man appears inconsistent in his emotional and physical performance, and I don’t know if those inconsistencies are worth the risk next season. It’s just business.

The very type of person that makes it to this level is going to have some kind of screw loose. Sometimes a few. Even the quiet, most seemingly grounded players are hyper-competitive at levels most of us here don't even have a way to comprehend. So I think it just kind of comes with the territory. He's not nearly as bad as DK was and had a VERY good season after his messy start. This was one of the dumbest penalties I can remember seeing on this team in recent memory, but I'll forgive it if it doesn't turn into a pattern again. But I think coach Mike would be unforgiving long before I would. He doesn't have Pete Carroll's "long leash" for this kind of thing.
It did for sure. But there's a strong argument that Macdonald should have pulled him from that next play to get his head back in the game. Because that didn't happen, Stafford/McVay were savvy enough to go right at him.
There's also an argument to be made that the taunting penalties are really dumb (and unevenly enforced). Are players hurting other player's feelings? Unless they are dropping slurs or getting personal about families and whatnot, I have a hard time caring. Yes, rules are rules even if they are stupid ones, and every one of these guys is paid more than enough to know that. No excuses for Woolen.
But in a larger sense, the league having the same level of penalty for "mean words" as they do for a dangerous late hit is stupid. Kinda like the flags they used to throw for using the ball as a prop in TD celebrations. Though at least those don't take the TD off the board.

Seems like it should be more like a 5yd penalty. Not a 15yd automatic 1st down. That's way overkill IMO.
