So many ways to start this thread, so I'll try to do it without making it too long, boring or messy. Just had a lot of hours wasted fighting with Windows 11 (which is not at all my primary OS... but I can get into that later). Just doing this to fill some folks in so they can make a decision on if they are concerned about this kind of thing.

Microsoft recently ended support for Windows 10 which has caused quite an uproar. Windows 11 has not at all been well-received for many reasons. System performance, major privacy concerns, messy interface, and just overall being a piece of crap that seems to be getting worse with each update. Not to mention how many people are on perfectly fine computers for simple everyday use that don't meet the minimum requirements for Windows 11. So they are stuck without the ability to do any updating.

Windows 11 AI "Recall" - A major concern with Windows 11 is that its built-in AI screenshots your activity. Regardless of how this is used, and it hasn't been fully cleared up what the answer is to that, it's a major issue that I don't understand how anyone is ok with. I don't even understand how it's legal... but that's another rabbit hole.

SOLUTIONS

I'm only evangelizing this route because I think it's now probably the best route to go for most. Obviously, using an Apple/Mac system is something many have done over the years, but that's only one (relatively expensive) solution that locks you into a whole other ecosystem that many like myself try to stay out of. I am not going to claim to know many details about Apple/Mac's current privacy or overall user experience situation. My only real use of a Mac in recent years is at the gym I coach at, and that's just to use a web browser to check clients in. The other solution is one that's gained a bit of a reputation over the years as being for tech nerds only or way too advanced for every day use, but those days are long past.

Linux is the OTHER OS solution, and the one that's been multiplying in user share the last couple years. Linux is an open source operating system that has many different "distros." Meaning, the core can be built upon by whoever wants to build on it, making many different decentralized versions of varying flavors, but all have the same core function. No one company owns Linux, so you don't end up with a Microsoft type situation where the company who owns your OS can do whatever they want with your data, force you into updates you don't want, etc etc.

Many, or I'd even say MOST distros are now to the point that they are easier to use and set up than Windows 11. I can say from my recent experiences trying to install Win11 to my second hard drive that it is absolutely the case. Most simply install and work perfectly right out of the gate with no long "opt-in" questionnaires trying to sell you things or trick you into giving up your privacy. I even find installing and using software to be infinitely easier.

If anyone ends up wanting to give up their Windows to try out a Linux distro, I'm happy to assist. It's much simpler than you might imagine. Just make sure you have a USB thumb drive ready to go if you decide you want to do it. My personal favorite for daily use I've stuck with after trying quite a few is: https://system76.com/pop/

So you can see on in action, here's my Linux desktop with Pop!_OS distro: (dual monitor, so you're seeing my side-by-side monitors in the screenshot). This is just one of many ways you can make it look as there are multiple "desktop environments" with varying degrees of customization, some even loading right into looking like a familiar Windows layout (which I find overly difficult to navigate, personally).

I'm generally fine with Windows 11, but do share most of the concerns listed. AI is intrusive, news feeds too. Cookies are the bane of our existence since they're used to track what we like and do. Or at least they can be. Social Media, particularly META, Insta, etc are the real culprits imho. Tracking software sucks and I am working on locking down my Samsung laptop better, with a VPN, Vivaldi browser (previously Chrome) and locking down security sections through Windows. I only run Windows Defender and it's okay, but have used other products like Norton, McAfee, etc.

I've thought about using Torrent, for the Dark web and have used it on previous laptops. Go away NSA!! LOL!

I just had a friend help me install Ubuntu (Linux) and am teaching myself to use it and to code with Python. Honestly it's pretty easy, as I learned Pascal, Cobol and Fortran in College and was a tech guy, front end web dev (UX now).

My friend is a high level Jedi tech guy, both hardware and software, security.. He worked for VR company out of Germany, but got laid off recently.. so I just said, here's my laptop you drive.. he asked a few questions and I drank (well so did he) while we hung out at the hacker club I go to occasionally. Black Lodge in Redmond!

My name is NEO there... or Bill with 2 L's!

So I've increased the speed of my laptop, have made it a little more secure.. hopefully @RCF, and others with chime in.

Now I just need to install a cell blocker on the house, for drones, and other nasty shite! I think Scoones or WALTROUS ARE STALKING ME ON BEHALF OF TRAVERS!

Cheers! Go HAWKS!!

@flybill ---> what a terrible way to start a day! I go to my favorite website and am now being asked to comment on Windows 11 when there are going to be great NFL games on TV ending with a SeaHawk win!

Not gonna happen! Maybe tomorrow...

Shame on you...

Ubuntu is definitely a step in the right direction but is one of if not the most "centralized" distros, and comes with a lot of bloat. If you're liking it, you should try something like the one I suggested, Pop!_OS. Much simpler and little to no software bloat. Ubuntu also has a very weird way of handling software packages that I won't bore everyone with 😂

I've installed Linux mint for older folks who were at best marginally computer-literate and they had no problems using it at all. It really does everything that the vast majority of home users need quite well without the headaches (and cost) that come with windows. The biggest problem I had was when one of them lost his eBay password and got pissed at me swearing up and down that he didn't have any password at all and it was my fault for installing the new OS that made eBay require a password. Some things just aren't the fault of the OS.

Do I use it? No. I certainly would but I need to use software for work that won't run on Linux. I sure wish I could. As soon as I take down my shingle I will ditch windows post haste and go to a Linux-based system.

Had to change my motherboard to go from Windows 10 to Windows 11. I think the tech who did my work put in a used motherboard. Sometimes I cannot get out of the Solitaire window and the Mahjong stopped working. When something asks for the cookies, I just X it out. Most times I have a second authorization to continue on a site. No sound out of this upgrade, either. I love my Anti-virus/Malware killers first thing I do along with a new VPN every time the 'puter is turned on. The lack of sound is what has the hairs on my head standing up. Hopefully, since I am on a tight budget, will be able to fix it when the income tax return is done (lots of medical deductions!). Oh yeah, cookies can slow things down. Thanks to Evan, I can now clear them out. (y)

I don't have a full partition, it just runs in an emulator, however I may do what you suggested after I play with it a bit. It did crash Window 11.666 or whatever version I'm up to with all of the fracking updates... DAMN you Gates! Nah, Gates is fine except for... never mind it's too political.. seriously!

Would you like to play a game of global thermonuclear war?

While you watch the HAWK's and order the $175 wallet that is bundled with some Vitamin V from HIM's?

Can you do this survey? Provide your email, cell, SSN, passwords and passkey's.. also all of your CC and financial accounts..

FlyBill aka the Nigerian Prince! I will send you ONE BILLION dollars for the transaction fee of $10kl! 500 have already claimed it today!

First thing you should do if anything is get rid of your "Antivirus/Malware" programs. They do little to nothing for you, and actually make a LOT of things worse. In 2026, they are no longer a useful tool despite making you think they're helping you.

You can also play those games on Linux if you ever get inspired. I can almost guarantee you'll fix a lot of those issues you're experiencing pretty easily. Weird about the sound though. I'm sure it'd be an easy fix in either Windows or Linux.

I have a puter that goes on the internet. I also have found puter's work better with no anti-virus. I think Norton is a virus! This puter for the internet I don't care what happens to it. But my best working and longest lasting puters all have not run Norton nor macafee. I thought I was the only person who thinks this way?

Oh not at all. Just about anyone who's a "computer person" ditched those over a decade ago. They're less than irrelevant but had successfully found a way to continue to get money from people despite providing no actual services.

Edit: If you insist on sticking with Windows, the built-in "defender" does WAY more than the paid services. But all do very little as most malicious type things on computers these days are more social engineering than old school "viruses." More lucrative to trick people into "sending money to their new celebrity friend" than installing something that will mess up their computer.

As Evan suggested, uninstall all 3rd party antivirus software. It is most likely the cause of the slowdowns. Windows 11 has Defender built-in. It has antivirus, antimalware, a firewall and more. It's built-in and Windows will use it UNLESS it detects another product installed. So, be sure that the Defender components are turned on after uninstalling the other stuff. Defender is very capable, and doesn't cause near the performance problems the 3rd party apps can. I don't believe Defender has a VPN though, so you may want that.

If you decide to add some of those apps again, install them one at a time and check to see if they slow things down again.

Good luck!

The joys of MS.
When working I was glued to MS machines for word processing and spreadsheets, my laptops equipped with VPN/RAS for biz travel access to corp intranet, and usually when travelling dealt with every MS software and remote access problem possible, spending hours on the phone with the IT helpdesk.

So for those with light duty requirements....once retired I immediately switched to Chromebooks and those days rarely turn on a PC.
Instant on, no buggy software issues, OS updates performed in seconds, hundreds of apps available though Playstore, very secure due to cloud based architecture utilizing sandboxes and encrypted local storage, pair ours with LastPass password management.
Not meant for heavy lifting of web design, gaming, etc, Chromebooks are a reliable and inexpensive choice for web browsing, emails and routine word processing.

They are definitely simple but come with the same type of security baggage. Comes down to how much of your everything you're OK with Google having access to/ownership of.

Problems with Windows 11......solved that from never upgrading from Windows 7. Now that is a good operating system.

So far have NOT had a need to update from Windows 7. I just keep running that "old" software. No need...to upgrade yet. If I need to buy new software I might change the operating sytstem.

I do use a IPAD Pro and a MacBook for cruising the internet.

I hated the Sequoia operating system, simply because it shows a Giant Sequoia Grove on its last legs before it is totally destroyed in a forest fire. As a forester, real tough to look at that screen every day at sign on. Sort of like looking at a once beautiful lady on her death bed. I really don't know why Apple did not use a picture of a healthy Sequoia grove.

Nicer screen with Tahoe. Between Mac and Windows both are pretty bad.

Really, I don't think the general public uses computers much anymore.

Everything is phones and apps. One reason I bought the MacBook was so I could run my astronomical apps on a laptop instead of a IPAD or phone. That and the privacy and security is much better on the Mac.

I have no idea what you all are talking about, I haven't turned on my puter in over ten years or more, LOL!

All my social media is done on my phone, hence some phat finger misspellings once in a while.

My only social media is this right here. But I loathe internetting on my phone. Can't stand it.
