Hunting pictures

Bob,
Way cool. Let us know where it was tagged if you get that info.

Brian - I checked with my daughter and she said the bird was banded as a hatch year (young of the year) in 2024 at Butte Valley Wildlife Area which is about 20 air miles away from where she harvested it. This is not at all unusual - western Canada geese tend to be non migratory. I found some photos from a goose roundup that we did while I was still working - I will post them in the "Got any bird pics" thread.

Time is running out, so I've been getting out there when I can. Last week was a bust. First time in well over a year. Today was great though. A pair of quail and a decent sized rooster. It only took 12.5 miles under foot to get them. Still, grateful to find birds this time of year.

I’m relatively new Washington. I believe that you are hunting Eastern Washington. How much of a pain in the butt is it to get over hills from the Seattle area. My old 2 wheel drive pickup doesn’t like mud and snow that much. I know I should get a new vehicle but until next season…..thanks

If the truck runs, hold on to it. If it's white, you will fit right in with the locals. Upland bird season runs (depending on species) from Late September / Early October through mid January (or end of January for Chukkar). Your biggest issue will be getting over the pass in the event of snow. That's just a matter of watching the weather and typically doesn't become a concern until December (Typically). Eastern WA is dry, most of the time. Early morning frost or a snow event could be an issue, but if it's a season like this season, there has been no snow and very little ice on the roads. 2wd is fine for 98% of what you can get into. I've on put my truck in 4WD a couple of times, and that was just to get to a few places, that weren't a deal breaker. In WA, public hunting or private, open to hunting is very limited, compared to other nearby states. And, just because it's huntable, doesn't mean it's good for birds, so your options start to get smaller very quickly. As far as your truck is concerned, you can typically drive into most WA hunting areas on a dirt road and end up in a parking lot, or even just pull off to the side of the road. The rest is research.

I've driven over Snoqualmie Pass many times in 2WD trucks, as @Replicant suggests: watch the weather. In years past, I had a Chevrolet S-10 2WD. I splurged and bought studded tires and had them mounted on winter rims (all four) which I changed out with the season. With a hundred pounds of sand bags centered over the rear axle, I never had a problem (unless chains were required). There's this action we as drivers can take that helps ensure we're getting where we need to go: SLOW DOWN when the weather is bad. I didn't take that truck offroad (nor do I take my 4WD Ram offroad).

Welcome! These guys have given you great advice. Watch the weather, carry chains.

My 90s fishing & hunting rig was a 2wd 1992 Nissan Hardbody pickup. Never got stuck. I nearly did in the snow and sand along Frenchman Hills Wasteway one mid-week solo hunt, but I think the weight of the canopy, decoys, Xtra large kennel and my 95# mutt gave me juuuust enough weight to escape. Just don't park with your front end down hill! Ask me how I know. ;)

Here it is in the mid-Columbia area on a quail hunt. My buddies Brittany waiting patiently, which is amazing as he was the most intense hunter of all of us. 😁

Thanks for the advice. The east side looks very inviting, I love that kind of country. I need to do a bunch of research. Before we moved up here I had built up 50 years of knowledge and experience hunting and fishing the Sierras and the central valley. I don’t have that kind of time left to explore this place properly but I do look forward to this new country and its opportunities. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

And though I didn’t hunt in Washington this year I did go with my daughter on her deer hunt in Colorado. She killed her buck late in the afternoon. We cleaned, quartered and backpacked out her deer under the most incredible Northern Lights. The photo wasn’t edited, the sky looked just like the picture. The Blood red color seemed fitting for the situation. We were in awe for the entire pack out.62563DC7-4ABE-4096-9944-DACEFBAEB3BE.jpeg

Love those photos! I had a Browning Gold and a Remington 870 pump years ago. Did go upland (south of Vantage) and duck hunting one time with a friend! Love to go trap and skeet shooting, miss that. Time to get something again... Watching the dog work, my friend took me out with his son, was awesome!

Crossing the Columbia at 3am on day two was cool too! Learned so much!

IMG_0897.jpegLast weekend of the season brought even more firsts for me and my boy!

First hard point, which was so badass bc he held the bird all the way to flush and then my dad and I both connected with the bird landing right in front of Morice so he made a quick and goofy retrieve to hand!

He went on to lock up several more times, one of which was a single that I pillow cased into the cattails….my dads Gordon and Morice followed me in and I looked all over for the damn thing not finding it. I walked out of the cattails and to my utter surprise, Morice had the bird in his mouth and brought it right to me with NO PROMT!!! I could have died right there.

The guy is only 8 months old and exceeding expectations massively.

Congrats! I can recall the feeling. My avatar is Hank's first honor, point & retrieve at 7 months.
