That's some serious wood-peckering . . .

Shot at 200mm but still crazy how close I got to this guy while skiing today

Wonderful photo! I was going to post a picture of some wild turkeys I saw today but after the quality of this photograph: Naw. Nicely done!!

Favorite time of year. Frogs making LOTS of noise for past few weeks, lots of bees around, geese paired up, robins doing their mating ritual and now a robin's nest tucked away in the usual spot. Eagles are getting lunch and dinner from the lake. And now mowing the 1/2+ acre starting this last weekend.

New visitor at the feeder today, about the size of a red wing blackbird. I don't know what this bird is, can anyone help with an ID? Sorry about the blurry through the window photos.

I think I found it. I'm guessing a nonbreeding male

But it looks like the range of that bird is more California than north coastal WA. I'm very curious!

So my friend the birder says it is a red wing blackbird. Apparently, the red shoulder is often invisible when perched. And they don't often come to feeders. Learn something new every day!

When we have had to unfortunately have to take a tree down on our property due to storm damage we always leave 10 to 14 feet of the 'stump' to remain. It is for the wood peckers that are around to get bugs or whatever. Lots of activity by the birds for sure. Nothing like what you have shown but we are always thinking about them in their habitat... A good thing IMHO!
