Agree and disagree. Definitely f'd up. Part of an education overhaul should include aligning students with their capabilities, plus their potential. Case in point, your DIL's school with Latino students at below average skill. Maybe it would mean putting kids currently in 4th or 5th grade in the 1st grade, if that is their current skill level, so be it. Even when I was in school over 50 years ago, they would go to great lengths to avoid "flunking" a student and making him repeat a grade due to the negative social effect. Yeah, but what about the negative academic and intelligence effect of pushing the student forward to keep on failing for the rest of their school years, and perhaps for their entire lives? And if there are a significant number of such students, then it brings the whole group down by teaching to the least common denominator. Which then results in consistently low scores on standardized tests.

American education needs a defined purpose. Is it to babysit, or educate? If educate, then organize it to do just that. Organize it around what kids can do rather than by age groupings. Even if that means one classroom of 5 to 10-year olds learning to tie their damn shoes. If that is all they can handle, then meet them there. At least they'll be skilled at tying shoelace knots by the end of the school year. Organize the rest of the elementary school around reading and math skill levels. I heard that the American "woke" thing has been to do away with "gifted & talented" education because it makes the unselected students feel left out, ungifted, and untalented. Duh! Yeah! When my kids were in elementary school they were selected for G&T. One teacher who I otherwise liked and respected was opposed to G&T based on his rationale that "all kids are gifted." Bullfvckingshit! If that were true, all students would have IQs of 140. They don't. There's a bunch of dummies, a bunch of average students, and some that are just unbelievably smart. They should all be taught from the level where they are at and toward where they have the potential to go. Before Christmas break in the 3rd grade, my kids had read every book in the elementary library.

Then there's the whole cultural dynamic that has the US lagging behind the other advanced nations. To wit, America's Greatest Generation produced and raised the Baby Boomer generation to be generally speaking, lousy parents. Not everyone, of course. (I had a lot of friends who were teachers, and my ex-wife once worked at an elementary school - what an eye opener!) It was shocking to learn that so many kids showed up at school in the mornings inadequately clothed, unfed, and far too often unloved. Is it any wonder that they aren't "ready to learn?" It's a sad commentary on society that the school needs a breakfast program in addition to the lunch cafeteria just so that all students can begin their school day without a nutritional deficit. And then the entitled Boomers blame teachers and the education system for their kids not getting a quality education.

And boy have I really gotten off track here, but hopefully y'all understand. And yeah, fvck AI. Human intelligence still needs critical work.

Try coaching modern day Boys and Girls Club athletics, it’s real sad how many kids have never even thrown a baseball with their “parents.”

Baby boomer here, parents of the “greatest generation “.
My dad like all the dads I knew growing up, had to work to much, hard to throw the baseball, fish, etc. All of us learned to play sports on vacant lots as we lived to far from schools to be able to attend sports. The only thing we had was Boy Scouts because my father and his father grew up with it.
Not to bash my parents, but there was a lot of things I wasn’t taught that I didn’t realize till many years later was a required lifeskill. Many tend to over generalize life, the past, rose colored glasses because who wants to remember bad shit?

It took decades after the post-war to build the middle class. People knew if they put in the time and effort they would improve life for them and their families. It was hard work but an effort well worth it. I was fortunate to have parents that understood life-balance. They would spend time taking us hiking, hunting, fishing and on vacations. At the same time if I wanted something, I had to earn it by cutting lawns, shoveling snow, pulling weeds, etc. I was also provided the opportunity to help my dad by digging trenches, wheeling wheelbarrows of concrete and removing rockeries for an addition he did on our home (my pay was it was free or a dollar and hour - my choice). This all helped develop a strong work effort.

My parents paid for my college education. It was an investment in my future. My wife and I did the same thing for our kids. It was not easy to do but we had 18 years to save to make it happen, and we did. Somewhere over time this concept became less common place. I talk to others and ask if they are going to pay for their kids education. The most frequent answer in no (but they have a brand new truck outside the bar).

Also, somewhere over time, kids have a lot more idle time on their hands. They do not help with chores. They expect things to be handed to them rather than work for it.

I saw this even when interviewing people for a job opening. One of the questions I always asked was 'where do you expect to be in 5 years?'. Most memorable response 'I will be a VP in this company'. I explained to him it took me 10 years to get into management. His response was 'obviously you aren't very good'. Little did he know...

Where am I going with all this? Much of society has lost the strong work ethic. A lot of parents are not investing in their kids future. People do not understand putting in the hard work pays off in the long run. The middle class is diminishing.

It is my belief AI could be the death nail of the middle class by eliminating so many entry-level jobs and providing a quick and easy answer to so many things rather than using our brains figuring things out the hard way. This is not a 'chicken little - the sky is falling' but rather a wake up call that we need to adapt and take advantage of everything we can so that we can grow rather than a society being the 'haves and have nots'.

A core education problem in the US has been in place well before AI emergence, which is we are still teaching our kids on the centuries old Edwardian K-12 model that was abandoned in most of Europe decades ago.
The answer to all of our questions remains as always, money.
In the richest nation on earth, education and healthcare should be viewed as rights, not tax payer burdens.
Our national priorities could not be more f'd up

If we had free education and free healthcare we would not be smarter if still teaching to the Edwardian model or healthier if obesity is our #1 preventable health concern. Money does not fix. It facilitates.

Phil Condit was in the same program.

All of this is the parent's fault. Your parents and my parents may not have actually known what they were doing or what the outcome of their upbringing might be. They probably acted much like their parents where they could. The real problem is the breakdown of the family and lack of moral guidance from the church that continues to degrade today. When a single parent wants to be their kid's friend instead of their parent it just doesn't end well. No one thinks about paying for college until it is too late. I tell people they have 18years just as you have stated. Saving for college is like a dry run for retirement. The same tools that allow you to pay for college are the tools you need to provide for your retirement. If college is a big issue so will retiring. College is a chance to find a better path before it is too late.

I had Thanksgiving dinner with an inlaws kid who went through school as an electrician and been through the union program at Hanford. Got programing skills too. He feels long term looks pretty good with those skills, and compensation is excellent. Might steer the grandkids that way.
Granny helped mom go back to school after dad left. I worked as I did 2 yr at Shoreline and 2 at the U while living at home, but they both helped me when I came up short for books. My sons lived at home and worked and I paid what they didn't have. No loan burdens. I already got enough for the grandkids as long as they go along with the program. Dad was a principal, his mom ran the one room school in Oso for a decade. Really think a solid education is important. I went back to school to be a land surveyor but all that prior learning was worthwhile and made me even better.
But yeah, we got to be involved for it to work.

all K-12, aside from private tuition schools, is paid for through tax dollars
The level of obesity in our society is not only stunning, marketing forces have now normalized it as a sales target.
And this rise in obesity, always accompanied by diabetes, heart disease and cancers, is generating rising costs in health care that everyone in plan must pay for obese or not.
This map speaks for itself..

Putting Ozempic in the water supply would fix this.

Let's get back to the doom and gloom of AI.

Reserve the off tangent rants for other threads.

I just read about a cool use case for AI: deciphering sperm whale language/codas. No idea if that's a pipe dream, but wouldn't it be cool if we could understand whale song?

They have been talking and singing for a lot longer than we have!

Gonna be allot of disappointed scientists when they realize the whales are mainly just making lewd comments and bragging about the size of their penis.

Question for all..

AI has been in the works for years. It has been in use, albeit in smaller ways, for several years. Technology has been making changes to support it for a number of years. National policy has tried to control it for awhile now. Now one can not go to anywhere, any news source, without seeing/reading about AI daily. There are at least two threads here on PNWFF now (and staying away from politics ---> thank goodness). I have a great AI article but will not post it here due to politics but have shared it privately.

So the question "how did you become aware of AI and when"?

From science fiction books at a very young age.

Synopsys software is widely used in designing everything from computer chips to jet engines. Engineers use its tools to simulate those designs virtually in computers before committing to expensive prototype manufacturing.
Those simulations can take weeks, but could be sped up to a few hours using Nvidia's chips, the CEOs of the two companies said during a press conference.

They are literally building Skynet. I've seen this movie before. Man creates something. He then realizes he can get chicks with the success it brings. Man makes money. Man gets more chicks. Man destroys element of culture. Man didn't care. Man destroys more with his creation. Man gets robot girlfriend as he is soulless. World of Man destroyed. Man laments loss of robot girlfriend and goes looking in the desert for Cherry 5000. Man rediscovers soul in post apocalypse type wasteland. Man creates again. Cycle starts over. What do you think got the dinosaurs?

In all seriousness though this is the technology that will finally make man unfit in the evolutionary sense of the word. Never before have humans been so far away from providing for their survival. Obesity is a function of that. All this automated AI will make it worse. I'm glad I'm not going to be around to see the end state of people. They already disgust me as a population in many cases. This technology is being developed by the worst in people. It's designed to reward the worst impulses. It will get a far worse result than anybody is hoping for. I for one herald the age of human blobs and idiots. They already can't figure out basic biology and nutrition. This will be their final form. They deserve it.
