Wheel bearing protectors flying off

I did lose another one or two after my last post I think. Boat has been parked since the beginning of October so nothing since then.

Before next season, I plan to repack all the bearings and do a thorough cleaning of the contact surfaces where the covers slide on. 🀞🏼
I think that I'm going to try having the tires balanced, thoroughly clean the mating surfaces with brake cleaner, and use the Loctite 680 that O' Clarkii Lewissi recommended... Not today though as it was 13 degrees here with a couple of inches of snow on the ground this morning.

13Β°F, whoa! It's only 62Β°F here today, pretty sure the grandkids want to go play on the beach which also means getting really wet.

Good luck with the bearing buddy issues.

I asked about balancing my 12" boat trailer tires and was basically laughed at. "We don't normally balance 12" tires."

My Boat trailer has rubber bearing protectors that slide on. They have been on there since I bought the boat used in 2009. The bearings have never been repacked in that time, the wheels still turn free and don't heat up after I run to the launch. I check them every other trip. EZ Loader trailer.

Thanks for the heads up. :ROFLMAO:
If nothing else I would like them to spin it to see if it's defective as it's only the one side that I'm having the problem with.

Take a screwdriver and hammer, tap at the seam where the bb fits into the hub…
As hard as it was to hammer it in I don't know if any more resistance would help. After seating it I wondered if I could ever get it back out...little did I know. :ROFLMAO:

So I'm not the only one I guess.

Just lost a brand new stainless one on a test run. Only about 8 miles on HWY 18. I pulled over to see if any heat. No heat and no friggin buddy on the right side. Ugh... So annoying. I have a standard 1.98 hub so using model 1980 stainless.

I will say, I just re-installed one of the old ones and it went on harder than the new one. The hubs are 20 years old. Are new hubs a tad bit bigger I wonder? Or maybe Bearing Buddy is making them a touch smaller? Improved machining making the new models not work with old hubs? Or maybe Bearing Buddy just sucks now?
The boat and trailer are both 2005 models. It still had ORIGINAL tires on it! Haha! I went all the way to Banks and back last warm early October. So glad I didn't have a blow out. Both show 04 as the year made. I got lucky there. One of my dumber decisions.

So now brand new tires, new grease/repacked bearings and new friggin stainless Bearing Buddies. Well, one new stainless buddy and one old regular one with a little rust on it. I'm definitely throwing the other old one in the truck just in case.

@Evan B have you lost any of the Lowe ones yet?

I think the culprit was my my lug nuts. I put them back on backwards. There's a round end and a flat end. I assumed the flat end goes in and the round end out. I was mistaken. Haven't lost any since flipping them. A common mistake to make apparently.

After losing one of my bearing buddies I replaced it with the Reese model from Etrailer and haven't lost it. I left the other Bearing Buddy on just to see and carry the other Reese in the event of losing the BB. 'Lugnuts were on correctly.'
