Just Hatched
Hello, Steelhead fisherman, our son is stationed in the Navy in Everett ,Wash & is interested in learning some basic shore drift fishing areas for some winter / summer steelhead action….it looks like Hwy 2 follows the Skykomish river or maybe the Snohomish…since he is just learning I was thinking of some easy access gravel bars smaller water…..thanks Rick

Instead of looking at the map he needs to look at the regulations and figure out where there is legal water for the time he wants to fish. After that, park where everybody parks and look for the trail.

Many things have happened. Nearly all have happened in the direction of less fish and less fishing opportunity.

And to think there was a time, not so long ago, we could have directed a newcomer to drive to Monroe, go to the Lewis Street bridge and join the line of anglers downstream of the bridge and actually catch steelhead.

Let’s be real, that was a long time ago.

Sky’s closed until further notice, but the Snohomish opens up next month and the Skagit can be good. The stretch near Hamilton is worth checking out.

WDFW found an excuse to get out of sport steelhead. The anti sport fishing orgs were all the state needed to walk away. Just look at what they did this week down south. And of course keeping the Skagit closed this winter with the excuse of no money after the largest tax increase in state History.

I guess it's relative. For as long as I've been fishing, it wasn't all that long ag

How long ago? Post 2000? Just curious, as a relatively new transplant I like to torment myself with this kinda data on what I missed.

These guys were saying this stuff when I moved here in 2019, and probably for years before that. All I know is, I missed it, too!

Just some prospective but not Sky related.
I believe it was 1985, the Puyallup supposedly had over 10,000 steelhead. I’m not sure how true that number was, but I caught a lot and saw a lot of others catching fish that year.
If I recall correctly, the last year they planted the Puyallup it got nine fish back.
I’m not blaming hatchery fish as there are lots of problems contributing to the demise of our steelhead fishing.
I caught my first steelhead on the Puyallup in 1968. I caught my last in 2014 though not on the Puyallup, which is the last time I fished for them.
