Digging another yard of my compost tomorrow and planning greenhouse starting dates . Still have a lot of parsley and oregano growing and shallots , winter stuff all growing swiftly. Favas and biennial broccoli from Sept planting about 30” tall. Temps very very mild . Lowest temp here so far since winter began is about 38-40 degrees. Garlic is taller than usual for January. Narcissus , and other bulbs on there way. Have made a soil amendment list. Will get it in the ground/ raised beds in the next month- 50 lbs cottonseed meal, 25lbs kelp meal, 12 lbs bonemeal , some worm castings(12. Lg bags) maybe ght grab 30 lbs of alfafa pellets. Happy gardening!

In the distance I built a secure ( squirrel security)5’ square planter for oca which I dig at Christmas time every year. Bolovia Red oca- roast saute or slice raw in salad like tiny potatoes that taste like a slightly citrus water chestnut… View attachment 171050
I have to admit that I had to look up Oca on Google. Never heard of it before. Based on the description, I would have like to try it, but the listed climate zones of 7-9 do not match my 4-5 so I will look for some in a nearby "world" food store

Mild climate tuber. I like my Bolivian red. I got my initial tubers 7-8 years ago from

Seasonable purchase - sell out quick- this is by far the most fair pricing.

I am in the process of buying a new house. The property has a butt ugly large RV carport on a concrete slab. I am going to sell or give away the carport but obviously the concrete slab will stay where it is. I have always wanted a good sized greenhouse and plan on putting one on the existing slab. Are there any greenhouse owners here who would be willing to offer any do's or don't's as I begin this project?

My daughter is buying a kit in CO and she and husband are installing it next year.

It will get wet inside the greenhouse. I think it would be a good idea to install a 6" or so concrete or concrete block stem wall to deal with the moisture. My sister had a small greenhouse built a few years ago. It's pretty standard framing with acrylic (I think) walls and roof. And plenty of ventilation on the ends that open and close. It's amazing how "too" hot they get in the summer tim

I harvested final crop or radishes today and pulled up the onions. I don't think the onions have grown any in the past month. Picked some more Sungold tomatoes, some from the outdoor raised bed plant and a bunch from plants in the cold frame/greenhouse. Should get another picking or two if it doesn't freeze.

I have been so fortunate to have my mom Regina who passed gently early this morning in her prolonged, much needed sleep. She was 99 years, 2 months , 3weeks shy of reaching her century birthday. A quiet but difficult day today. Many communique’s today to her dozens of pen pals, friends and distant family members that needed to be gently messaged.

Condolences for your loss, and cheers for a long life lived, Skip

Skip,
Sorry for your loss.

Back to gardening, yesterday I dug a bit of oca. I have a lot more to dig. The tradition is dig at Christmas time and immediately replant the very small oca tubers about 6” deep as I dig. I suppose my method is a way to over time develop larger tubers. Selective breeding I suppose

I had to look up what OCA is. Never heard of it before. I hope it tastes better than it looks!

Hey Capt. I am so sorry for your loss. The loss of a mother leaves a hole, mine passed a few years ago. I have some wind chimes gun behind the house, by bedroom, the wind reminds me of her and I talk to her when I hear her chiming.

I will pray for you and your family.
