Click pawl reels are the Harley Davidson of the river

πŸ˜‚ lol yep, I RHW now so I can spend all my money on old clickers and really make it noisy out there
A good investment. All mine are worth at least twice what I had to pay for them. Except when they are retired by me I won't be able to just sell them. They will have to be emotionally given away.

I think I've only got one clicker left....an old Youngs Beaudex that I'll probably never part with even though I hardly ever use it (hmmmm, may have to change that this weekend, balances out my 6wt bamboo nicely)...even my System 2 caliper drag reels are too loud for my liking. They ARE great to let people know when you're stripping out line in a run so they don't come down and low hole you though....mostly kidding. In all honesty though, while not as applicable in many rivers, with much of my fishing taking place with muskies in lakes and carp, I prefer a far more silent approach.

Helluva nice collection you got there, @Paige. What in the hell is that tiny thing at the bottom?

This exists in the gear fishing world as well. Trolling reels have a clicker you can turn on and off with a switch on the side of the reel. Its purpose is to alert you when a fish is on in case you aren't staring at the rod. Very useful especially with tuna trolling.

One way to get me all agro is to leave that on when you're letting your line out, retrieving your line, fighting a fish, etc. Hearing other boats with their clickers going all the time while salmon fishing gets me worked up.

I had one fly click pawl reel I tried for my carping one season. Only lasted one season, though. Went back to other things after that.

tell me more about this

I mean, people leave their clickers on for no reason and I get unreasonably upset. Not much else to it. You want a poem or something?
jesus, a guy does it once (perhaps thrice).....

edit: yes, a poem woulda been nice.

.skreeeeeeeeeeee,,,soskreeeeeeeee.

It's so unneeded and unwarranted. They say loud pipes save lives. I say it's an invitation to leather clad relations in the bathroom of The Toolbox bar and grill.

Loud reels? Basically the same thing with tin cloth and fancy hats.

A clicker left on makes me boil,
Like tuna lines tangled in toil.
The racket’s obscene,
It shatters the sceneβ€”
Just turn it off, spare my blood’s boil!

It's an invitation to draw your attention to their rod.

Thanks DC, we needed a good humor thread! And while I like my noisy click and pawl reels on fly rods, I absolutely detest folks who engage the clicker on their 'pin reels when fighting fish. Not what it's intended for and done either to announce to the world that they're finally hooked up or to pretend they're flyfishing with a cool click and pawl reel.

Sheesh! Here we go again. Chromers, learn to get your nomenclature correct. Please! For the umpteenth time, there is no fvcking such thing as a "click pawl" reel. Go ahead, take one apart. Examine each and every part - there aren't many. There is no "click" or "clicker." You'll find that there are a spring, a pawl, posts to hook the spring and the pawl onto, and a gear wheel on the backside of the reel spool. See, no fvcking clicker! It ain't there!

Spring and pawl reels are simplicity itself. And durable longevity, outlasting Harleys by a long shot. As others have mentioned, if the sound offends you, clearly you're standing too close. Move along, son.

I don't know, I'm appealing the ruling on this one to @Wadin' Boot .
Rhyming "scene" with "obscene" is pushing it, but surely it's not legal to rhyme "boil" with "boil."
