Finally got out and fished some bamboo I picked up.

I managed to pick up 4 or 5 bamboo rods over the winter but a bathroom remodel has kept me from getting them out fishing. Luckily I had a two week road trip planned that was going to involve some fishing.
Left Auburn CA and Made it up to visit my sister in pullman. Caught the Cougars Vandals game and saw how much growth had happened since I went to school there. From there I stopped by the Red Shed on the clearwater but missed Poppy. Was hoping to test cast some of his Poppy cane he is now making. Camped and fished along the Lochsa for a couple days and used my Sweetgrass Mantra 8' 3" 3pc 5wt to catch some nice cutthroat. This is a fairly fast rod and loved both the DT ultra 4 SA line and a Wulff long belly line. Very light in hand and a joy to fish.

From here we headed to Sula MT and stayed in a cabin and fished the East fork of the Bitteroot for a couple days. We were too late in the Day to fish the Bitteroot with the hoot owl regs in place but the east fork had some nice sized fish for the size of the stream. Fished a RK Bolt 7' 3" 3wt that is a taper of Gary Howells. This rod was finicky with lines and I did not think I was going to like it until I put on a Cortland peach DT and it came alive. Perfect rod for the East fork.

Lots of mountain goats around Sula as well.

From Sula we headed up to Helena to visit friends and on the way we were able to stop by and visit Glenn Bracket at Sweetgrass. We was a wonderful person and took time to come down and open the shop and walk us through how he makes the rods.
I was able to hit the Missouri for a few hours near Helena and there were large trout porpoising everywhere. They were keyed in on a trico hatch and really did not want what I had to offer. Got a couple to rise at a hopper pattern but missed both. I got rid of anything tied on a 22 in my box. Can't see them anymore.
Headed to West Yellowstone after that and fished outside the park on the Madison. Different sections by foot fishing a Chris Raine 8' 6" 3pc 6Wt. Chris had to fix the ferules for me on this rod and he did not ask for any money to do it. He told me this rod was a taper of Jim Reames. It was a powerful rod and it did not seem all that great with a SA DT but Came alive with a Wulff Long belly. Also fished streamers with a Teeny 130 line and streamers are what most of the fish I caught there were after.

A great trip and I was able to catch fish on all of the rods I brought. I really enjoyed the way these rods fished and can't wait to get a little more use out of them this year.

Nice report and nice fish!

Ditto, I enjoyed the report.

Is your Rainey rod hollow built? I read an article about him years ago and I seem to remember that he was building them that way.

A great selection of bamboo and classic reels. Like you I've been steering away from the small flies which are really hard to tie and difficult to see on the water...

Wow, what a great trip and great report! Sula has become one of my go-to areas, the cutts in the E and W forks are a bit scattered and a bit of work to find but it make for some pleasant fishing, especially with a nice bamboo rod. And is that an Iwana reel? What size? Cool!!!

I didn’t verify it with Chris but it is labeled hb and I believe he and Reames mostly build hollow builds. It is not as light in hand as the sweetgrass but a bit more rod too it.

I really enjoyed the east fork and wish I had more time to fish that area including the west fork.
The reel is a 2 3/4 Bellinger classic and was one of those eBay buy it now steals. It fits a dt3 with some room left for backing. Very smooth and great purr with a fish on. A couple of the cutthroat actually got me on to the reel in sula.
on one of these threads you posted a picture of your rod loaded up during casting. I was surprised at the casting qualities of these rods lined up with the right line. The swetgrass and raine could throw very tight loops accurately and dealt with the wind like champs.
Here are pictures of the raine, I think, but it could have been the sweetgrass loading up on the cast.

I have that exact same Iwana, it was my compensation for doing some photography for Shane Gray a couple years ago. I use it for my 4 weight line.

The West Fork has a couple spots where it’s possible to pick up a cutt over 16” or longer. But access is somewhat challenging.

On the East Fork heading south a few miles north of Sula is an old faded historic building across the road from the stream. The local fly shop called it the old brothel. We parked there once and fished the East Fork in that stretch. My buddy changed into his waders on its old front porch. After fishing we drove back to Bitterroot Brewing in Hamilton at which point my buddy, still in his waders, announce he “forgot his shoes at the brothel.” I think I laughed until I cried at that comment.

I was fascinated at the thought of hollow building a bamboo rod when I’d first learned about it. Thanks for the reply.

I dropped in to Sula from the Idaho side on a trip a long time ago w/o a Montana fishing license. Thank goodness they sold them at that little store at the wide spot in the road!!

FWIW, I’ve heard that hollowing the cane tends to make the rod feel faster and stiffer, and that a good hollow build will have a taper that offsets this effect. I once had a blank made by a well known budget maker from Oregon who gave me the option of having it hollow built but without any change to his standard taper. I hated the rod, it felt like an 8’ broomstick.

Here’s a photo I found of a cross section of a hollow built bamboo rod. I find it fascinating. It illustrates in part, to show just how strong bamboo really is.

Still learning about bamboo rods and how they are built. I'm reading the book about E.C. Powell by Per Brandin and these are a couple pages showing the patents, I believe, from EC Powell and Winston and show how they were taking a little different approaches to hollow building rods. When I stopped by sweetwater, Glenn showed me their process for hollow building and glued up blanks that looked pretty simular to your picture.

Had you tried the same blank with it not hollow built? I would think that hollowing it would make it quicker but not stiffer. I know Chris Raines websight talks about tapering the inside of the rod as well but I'm not sure what that is talking about.IMG_7649.jpegIMG_7650.jpeg

Those trico hatches.....
I remember the first time I saw those, from a viewpoint on the road above the river. I thought it was steam from hot springs, which was weird.
