I did not know the Yankees were under investigation for sign stealing and per NJ.com, "A federal appeals court shot down the Yankees’ argument that a letter allegedly showing that MLB hid the team’s sign-stealing scheme shouldn’t be unsealed.” Hmmmmm.

Yes.

Stop protecting those dam Yankees!!!

"Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association have agreed to rule tweaks that will expand rosters, place an automatic runner on second base during extra innings and allow pitchers to remain in the lineup after they have been replaced on the mound, an industry source confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday."

Canuck- didn't I hear you lobby for some of these things?

Hoot!

What

Heard about "Ohtani rule", ie, they can remain in the game as a hitter if they've been replaced, the Little League runner on second is apparently under consideration, hopefully saner minds prevail.

George Will commissioner, please !!!!!

cheers

What's next? T-ball and replace the pitching position on the mound with an infielder? Eliminate bunts? Sheesh!!!

Been watching a lot of pre season baseball lately and I'm sad to report that announcing is even worse than last year. Several things stand out. Motor mouths that view a few seconds of silence as the ultimate broadcasting sin and give you no time to evaluate what you are watching. These guys are talking everything but baseball, their goal to just keep talking.

Little thought seems to be given to the quality of the color commentators voice. One guy I heard today had a thin raspy voice that was as irritating as fingernails on a blackboard. Didn't anyone listen to him before giving him the job?

"Homers" -guys that glamorize the home team-have always been an issue and I didn't think I would ever hear anyone worse than Hawk Harrelson for the Chicago White Sox but he now has some serious competition. I tried to watch a Dodger game today and listening to Charlie Steiner glorify the Dodgers was like getting a prostate exam. Were you to believe him and his complicit lackey you would think the Dodgers were the best team in the world and virtually unbeatable. As a lifelong Vin Scully admirer hearing Steiner is a huge retrograde move and then finding that he will be teamed with the Human Metronome-Orel Hersheiser-is really discouraging. The unbeatable Dodgers got their ass kicked despite Freddy Freeman being acclaimed as the equivalent of the second coming of Christ.

Then I tried watching some of the Mariners game. If Dave Sims is on I always turn it off but today he wasn't there and Goldsmith is a helluva lot less irritating. Still the Mariner broadcast always seems to come off as a minor league presentation. Too many amateurish gimmicks that remind me of watching D-league ball back in the '50's. I expect milking contest and Sadie Hawkins Day races any time now.

Baseball's efforts to kill the goose that laid the golden eggs appears to be working.

However, play on the field is at a very high level already considering they have only been playing a week. Some of the 5-4-3 double play ballets have been stunning so far and circus catches in the outfield seem routine. I would like to see more small ball with an emphasis on bunting and base running and I think most fans would prefer that to just sitting on their hands waiting for the next 3 run homer. Overall I would give the game a B- right now with lots of room for improvement. Umpires are one of the weakest links as so many are unfit for the job. And the tendency for the front offices to use data management metrics to interfere with on field decisions is wrong headed. Still, if your kid is into sports you might remind him that the minimum wage for MLB players is $700,000 and the average pay over $4mil. Unlike football players they usually retire in good health as well.

Kind of what's next, but it's already agreed to as part of this recent agreement: in 2023 defensive shifts are no longer allowed and a tied all-star game will end with a home run derby to determine the winner....

Eliminating the shift would be an excellent move. I hope that actually becomes the rule.

"Keep your eye clear, and hit 'em where they ain't"

I don’t like the shift but if hitters can’t hit the other way that is how you defend against them. Been that way ever since little league. I think teams should be able to defend a hitter anyway they want to.

If you are a pitcher that can’t hit worth a damn, don’t worry we will let someone hit for you. If you are hitter that can’t go the other way, that’s ok we won’t let them shift the defense to take away your easy base hit. Baseball is going backwards. Sort of like everyone gets a ribbon.
