Capr meditate . . .carp the fish go into some kind of non-bite mode.
I was in Desert Fly Angler the other day and a guy came into the store who has a cabin at Mardon. He said there's quite the hatch going on right now. Good luck.I've always wondered if they take a break from eating in August because they can afford to do so. Meaning they fatten up post spawn in June & July and then coast thru the dog days of summer.
Maybe they don't like water that gets too warm?
I'm at Mardon right now with the family and we plan to be sand bar bums out there somehwere tomorrow so I might try to find a bar that's also next to a carp spot. We'll see. I have 2 bass rods, a carp rod and then 2 spinning outfits setup to troll for walleye.
May only catch rays. We'll see.

What size/strength tippet are you using?I'm still crushing the selfie game....![]()

For comparison, from a couple of weeks ago....

both suck...anyway, I normally would just set up my GoPro and pull a still off of that if I were so inclined, but none of the fish that hit my net were really all that noteworthy.
TOUGH fishing yesterday with fish seeming extra spooky (so I guess typical August CAPR). found a few....broke off a couple too

12lb flouro. I'll bump up to 15 0r 17 on occasion, but I tend to get fewer eats (this was Seaguar Premier, but normally I use STS). One sawed me off on a rock and the other went into the weeds and I broke him off trying to muscle it out....probably could have just let it do it's thing for a while, then gradually gotten it out. Honestly, I don't break very many off in the grand scheme of things even when weeds are around. What size/strength tippet are you using?
I've been using Rio mono bonefish leaders leftover from a trip, they're 10-feet long, 12# test. After a few (several?) fly changes I knot on 12# Seagaur InvsX. I hear ya about abrasion (better your leader than your line) as those darn capr's do, from time to time, get into the rocks. The last one I broke off was fish No. 10 to the same fly/leader - the submerged duck blind spelled the end of that fly and tippet. (Still grinning.)12lb flouro. edit: ya know, looking at the specs on the Premier, it's a bit thinner which is great for stealth, bad for abrasion resistance, in which both ended up a bit abraded at the break.
It's funny, I've gradually gone longer and longer. I think my base leader is a 9' Orvis Mirage 15lb with 5-6' of class tippet tied off the end of that....fished off my 8' 9wt glass!edit: the 10-foot leaders might be a tad long for my liking
I'm intrigued with the four flies on the left; please give this thread some feedback!/Pat
You're fishing a stouter leader than me so you are able to turn over heavier flies; I'd call that good thinkin'. I'd really like to try a heavy glass rod (my only glass is a 7'-6" 4 wt). It's funny, I've gradually gone longer and longer. I'm not trying to be contrarian....
we can make this happen....You're fishing a stouter leader than me so you are able to turn over heavier flies; I'd call that good thinkin'. I'd really like to try a heavy glass rod (my only glass is a 7'-6" 4 wt).
I’ll fish a clam fly with rabbit and a chenille tail. This adds a couple of turns of eggstacy to add an egg sac. Didn’t like it in the water though, too bright.I'm intrigued with the four flies on the left; please give this thread some feedback!/Pat
This past Thursday I tried a chartreuse mop fly as I had heard about a local who was catching carp with one. It didn't work for me; several fish bolted from it............I’ll fish a clam fly with rabbit and a chenille tail. This adds a couple of turns of eggstacy to add an egg sac. I'm out to about 13' with either 10# fluoro, 12# SA Absolute Clear (got it for free and actually like it) or all the way to 12# Max if worried about breaking off more than spooking them. It's funny, I've gradually gone longer and longer. I agree that fly lines spook carp, don't ask how I know.I'm out to about 13' with either 10# fluoro, 12# SA Absolute Clear (got it for free and actually like it) or all the way to 12# Max if worried about breaking off more than spooking them.
I'm convinced the fly line spooks them more than anything else (well, besides a bright fly) so like the longer leader for drag & drop or even lead, wait, twitch. And if they're spooky I haven't found anything better than a regular Hybrid. I'll go really small with it too. The wine colored siphon/tail is highly visible, but not too bright. Only trouble is I can't really see it. Gotta watch the fish and rely on a little Zen.![]()
