Steelhead Fly Swap

“Remember mine are fishing flies not works of art. :)

Everyone should know that Rob wins the ‘easiest fly swapper to do business with’ award!’ Everything was marked, pre-packaged, labeled, ready to return ship... I was impressed!

This might sound ridiculous but one of the toughest parts of a swap for me is getting everything organized. I’m trying to match names, addresses, fly photos, and user names. Something about it drives me nuts! Haha. But it’s really a blast too. Lost of fun getting the deliveries.

Post a pic of how he sent them. For future reference. I figured it was like, take a post it note, make a pile for each member then toss 1 fly of each in like your dealing cards.

Oh, I should’ve mentioned the shenanigans with the post office! 😂

We had a set of flies (don’t out yourself) in a standard letter envelope. And the hooks quickly ripped through the flimsy paper. Hahaha. Fortunately they all made it! Got a message from the post office to receive a package they secured.

They had put it into a thicker USPS mailer by the time I got to it. CCCB7544-A9E7-49CC-89E4-5EFB8C7A1E85.jpeg

I wish I had a picture of the original envelope because it’s hilarious. Just imagine hooks hanging out everywhere from an envelope. 🤣

Dude…I learned things from how he put it all together. I’ll dig in to see if I can find any pics. But this man has definitely hosted more than one fly swap before. He’s been trained.

And to your point it was definitely like that. But with some extra effort to match real names with online names. And then some ship all their flies (including their own) to be evenly distributed, while others only ship the flies going to other people.

I don’t know - maybe my brain isn’t cut out of it. But it’s a blast to host.

Ohhh I forgot about the online names, yea that could get tricky.

SBS on how to correctly respond to a fly swap

Those are some really nice flies, folks, and a shout out to the mystery tyer as well. Now, to get out there and use them.

For future reference here is what I did.
1. Put the flies in a small box
2. Went to the post office and got two flat rate padded envelopes.
3. Address one and then ask them for a return label for the other package and put it inside the other package with the flies. It was like 19 bucks. Expensive , I suppose but it's not a lot of money so who cares. It makes it so the swapmaster just has to stuff the flies in the return envelope, seal it and drop it in the mailbox. Plus you get tracking and insurance.

....

I should also mention that we've had an anonymous mystery donor that mailed in some gorgeous flies! He's got a big heart and wants to see his hand tied work put to a good cause. I'm still thinking about how to divvy them up...PhilR and I are meeting for beers soon and can talk it over.

Extra flies came from a mystery donor. I'll raise one in his honor when I get them on the water
