NFR 2025 Gardening Growing Thread

Non-fishing related
Yeah overdue starting a new thread. Not much news other than i have dug up all our begonia bulb and put in the greenhouse . Raked swept the balance of leaves . Digging another yard of my compost tomorrow and planning greenhouse starting dates . Still have a lot of parsley and oregano growing and shallots , winter stuff all growing swiftly. Favas and biennial broccoli from Sept planting about 30” tall. Temps very very mild . Lowest temp here so far since winter began is about 38-40 degrees. Garlic is taller than usual for January. Narcissus , and other bulbs on there way. Have made a soil amendment list. Will get it in the ground/ raised beds in the next month- 50 lbs cottonseed meal, 25lbs kelp meal, 12 lbs bonemeal , some worm castings(12. Lg bags) maybe ght grab 30 lbs of alfafa pellets. Happy gardening!

I have a couple large screened raised bed boxes that are completely screened with hatdware cloth and hinged doors. Jeanne said she was not fond of my love affair with trombocini climbing squash but planted a few in the tall one anyway. The horizontal one is full of Ozette Makah potatoes…View attachment 159990View attachment 159991
Makah potatoes make the best mashed potatoes ever.... but why to you cover them ?

Squirrels, urban squirrels trained by elders in the spring and after training holy hell war on gardeners explodes, so I spent a lot of time with a security system of my own design. I am not autistic , just got pissed off about the squirrels screwing around in every bit of the garden. I feel them watching me. That creeps me out.

My cilantro is coming along.

Question for basil growers. The seed package said Elephant Basil, which I believe is the same as mammoth basil. Some of the leave edges have turned brown, almost like it is getting sunburned. I’ve been putting it in the shade in the afternoon. Can it take full sun all day or is the shade route the way to go?
I probably over planted this pot a bit. 😂

I have grown Mammoth, thai, Genovese and many others. Always in part shade with
Morning sun and shade during the afternoon and into near evening. I water daily and regularly pick leaves for the kitchen and dry in my food dryer . We use a lot of basil and I grow large leaf varieties . I grow from 15 to 25 plants from seed every season. An effective way to grow it is under tomato plants where moisture and shade protect them from sun damage and are a great companion plant

Do you ever make pesto? If so, what is the best type of basil for making it?
Maybe a little late, but I also just planted some Genovese.

Yes I do. And have an old ice cube traythat I scoop the pesto into for freezing. It is just the two of us so a single defrosted cube of pesto and some linguine is dinner. Genovese or large leaf Italian basil is best but just my opinion. Lettuce leaf of Mamoth is a novelty very mild and the coolest use in my opinion is as a wrap of cucumber quickles and grated pecorino and slivered choice of olives , a jar of julienned sweet peppers and a great olive oil. Endless possibilities for finger food trays of the Italian sort.

Thanks for the ideas.
I plan to do something similar with mine. I was thinking along the lines of prosciutto and fresh Parmesan with some of my tomatoes. Balsamic vinegar will likely come into play at some point when I come up with a combo I like.
