NFR Rant: people suck at talking on the phone

Non-fishing related
Phone calls are just fine and I think they're overall great. Just not my choice for most situations.

The point of the thread is about keeping private conversations private along with frustration and befuddlement at the new trend of making phone calls in the worst possible way.

I see more people holding the receiver out in front of their face like it's a slice of pizza than up on the cheek where it belongs.

Try having a quality smart phone "on speaker" conversation while eating pizza. It's harder than it sounds.

Phone rant 👍👎

I thought it was going to be about people don’t like to talk on the phone at all and prefer to text. I get annoyed when it takes 6 or 10 texts or emails to make a decision on something that would’ve been a 2 minute call.

I agree completely! I'd like to add that email can be even worse than texts in this situation because there is less of an expectation for a speedy reply. Sometimes a phone call is much more efficient. Barging into their office like Kramer might be the most efficient method of all, though.. 😁

The constant email ping pong barrage is one of the things I miss the least now that I've retired.

I was jarred awake at about 10:00 the other night by a speaker phone conversation. My neighboring house is an air B&B, which in and of itself is kind of annoying. I am not sure which was worse: the speaker phone (and the associated increase in volume of voices on both ends of the conversation), or the overly healthy peppering of the words "dude" and "bro" throughout.
From another old man yelling at clouds I guess...

Seatac bathroom with speakerphone on.....while taking a leak....really?! Happens all the time.
I've definitely heard speaker phone conversations coming from inside bathroom stalls.

Kinda hard to unzip, take a leak and hold a phone to your ear. I think.

Same rule doesn't apply when taking a dump. Your hands are free to do whatever for a few minutes. There's also earbuds, as well as "I'll call you back after I drop the kids off at the pool."

I'll bow to the voice of experience.

Never will I ever.

And 9 times out of 10, I prefer texts to phone calls. I am a lot better at collecting my thoughts and remembering what I need to say with texting. I'm not at all a good vocal communicator.
I must be the contrarian. I don't have an instrument that allows sending or receiving text msgs nor do I want one. You want to talk to me you have to call me. If I'm on the road driving I won't pick up. I'll return calls when I'm able. Sad story in the paper a few years ago when a school teacher on a bicycle was hit and killed by a driver who was texting his girlfriend and not paying enough attention to his driving. If that wasn't bad enough the girlfriend he was texting was sitting right next to him in the car. When a recording asks me if they can text me a link the answer is no. Eventually I get to talk to human being which is the way I like it. When I'm fishing the cell phone stays in the truck. Just old fashioned I reckon.

Nothing wrong with that either. We all have our preferences. Texting while driving is definitely an activity I condone even less than public speakerphone.

Still - text vs phone call is a different discussion. This rant is about public use of speakerphone and how people seem to be declining in their knowing how to use a phone to make a proper phone call. I'm advocating for proper phone calls here!

Not being contrary, just genuinely curious: why do you care if someone is scrolling or texting from a medical waiting room?
You prefer people nervously stare at you instead?
I'll personally be scrolling PNWFF in those situations, while raging hard at the person a few seats over on FaceTime.

referring to folks talking loudly on their phone in small waiting rooms..could care less what they do with their phones as far as texting or being glued to their social media

Update in the "can't make this stuff up" category:

Most neighborhoods have "that house." The one with the broken down cars, fence falling apart, unkempt lawn, etc etc. Well this house also has two large, aggressive, untrained dogs. Just this past week, one of the like 5 people who live there decided to start taking one of them for daily walks, which I commend.

But just this morning, while on their walk, they stopped right in front of my house in view of my office window here. Owner stood and watched the dog take a giant dump right on my grass, which he of course left for me to deal with. The real kicker though? He was talking on his speakerphone, holding it out like it was a slice of pizza. It's like the guy knew every box to tick to ruin my morning.

My German neighbor lady, she takes vengeance on people that their dogs poop in her yard. A while ago she followed a guy, found out where he lived, came back to my house, asked for me to collect a bag of our dog shit, she dumped it all of his front porch. She's an old sauerkraut.

Got a shovel? I've tried netting my raised beds to keep the cats out (neighbor seems to love adopting stray cats), the nets complicate weeding. Some cat (maybe it's her cat?) has decided it can dump on top of the netting, apparently the cat's weight collapses the net to the dirt making it a good place to leave its mess. My wife's nifty little garden trowel gets the job of scooping up the turd which I flip out into the alley near their fence.

I guess this post is a MEGA thread drift: back on topic now.
