After a dismal, trying day with my lab joining me fishing for brook trout,
I realized I have to teach/train her to enjoy water. She’s not a natural by any means. Second day working with her will wade out when called, as long as I have a treat.
Otherwise she sits, watches me stumbling in the river.

When I showed her one fish, she tried grabbing him by the tail for lunch, maybe foreboding of the future?

Same here only then I'd have had a dog AND a tree in the water.

I think Amber is going to be more like our last lab. Shelby didn’t care about swimming, would stand beside me watching or follow behind as I moved. A lot of the time she wandered in the brush, occasionally coming back to see if I had drowned yet.
Amber prefers looking for birds same as Shelby did.

That could be a difference. I didn’t introduce mine to water till she was 2 1/2 years old.
Even now won’t go deeper than mid body. Will stand there but really wanting to be on the shore.

Chaos the pit is getting up there and isn't so active and Kavik the Sheppherd is weird and super intense but they get along well.

She is more into upland birds, will point.
But does prefer climbing up on trees to get birds.
Especially funny with an arborvitae.

So funny watching her, wife gets mad.

Our wonderful Heeler (Tilly, no longer with us) used to do the same with strawberries on the farm in Kansas. She would pick them just sooo gently, fun to watch. Miss her!!

Not me since I’m in Florida but my son took our dog to somewhere ….. and he usually goes high and off the beaten path.

His first trip out in the boat went great! Lots of hanging on the bank but he was well behaved in the boat. Took long enough to get out there with him but the weather and rivers here have been crap. Looking forward to more of this.

Well not sure if she is a fishing dog yet - I haven't taken her out, but here is Benny our new Golden Retriever pup that came from @dirty dog most recent litter. She has been a wonderful addition to our family and I can't wait to get her out on the water and I gain a new camp/fishing dog.
