PNW Fly Fishing Semi-Official Swap, Shop, Fish & Eat - May 17, 2025

Edit: 9yo saw me writing this and required me to clarify. He doesn’t hate stillwater, it’s that if he’s “gonna sit for eight or ten hours trying to catch something, it’s gonna be six on a plane, two in a car, and a flats skiff for tarpon”.
This is fucking golden.

This is fucking golden.
In small doses. 24/7 it gets a bit tiring.

For career day he brought in his fillet knife and a vac-sealed coho fillet. Found that out when the principal called me to let me know that Ollie had brought a “large military-style knife” (8” Dexter fillet knife) to school. Only got out of that one because he’d brought the fish and was also wearing deck bibs so I was able to convince them he was just really into the cosplay they’d started.

I've been waffling the past few days on making this post and brainstorming any way to do a salvage mission, but here goes:

Short answer: We are canceling the feast portion and just having a camp/social gathering with no formal agenda.

Longer answer: Interest and commitment for this event have been far below our initial estimates, and well below what we need to hit break-even for the forum as well as @Jerry Daschofsky . I know there's likely many who want to go but didn't yet or couldn't commit yet, but with the current numbers, it's looking very unlikely we can cross the finish line.

We never expected it to be a huge event attended by hundreds, but with the costs associated with it (especially the feast) and the nature of the swap meet, having just a few guys show up will not be quite the event we had planned.

I know some of you were looking forward to it, and the camping among friends was going to be a good time, but things just aren't super feasible as it stands. We're currently at the deadline for canceling so it's time I move forward with the hard decision.

Hope to try another event at some point! Just need to find a when/where/what that works out.

Booo! I was really looking forward to this.
Trust me, not an easy decision. It also doesn't HAVE to be totally canceled.

If those who were planning to camp still wanna camp and be social, then we can continue that part of the plan. Just need to gauge interest in that.

I wanna camp and be social (and fish a bit). Any reason we can't swap stuff among ourselves? In other words, is the only real change that we don't get @Jerry Daschofsky 's excellent cooking?

Also, I think some folks reseved campsites outside of the group camp - do you know the cancelaation deadline for those? If no one else is showing up, I'll cancel my reservation for Campsite 48 and take my already reserved days off and go fishing somewhere prettier.

Right - I canceled Jerry's feast because we're not even halfway to being able to cover his minimum costs.

I haven't yet canceled the group site, I'm just being honest in saying I don't know enough will show for a real deal swap meet. So if we just wanna turn this into "hang, swap a few items, potluck" event of sorts, then we can keep the sites as-is.

One note: I have not YET canceled the group site. If anyone wants to take that reservation over and continue on with the social aspect, I'm happy to accommodate that somehow. If not, I'll be issuing refunds for those of you who purchased camp and food reservations.

Hard call to make, and it sucks we didn't get the attendance commitments that would have made this thing truly awesome, but I respect you making it. Hopefully we still get to camp, but I'll understand that too.

Thanks. I'm on board with a "hang, swap a few items, potluck" event. I can bring a 2-burner Camp Chef stove and a propane tank if that's helpful.

I'll be there with equipment to cook for myself. The equipment is the easy part. Just to keep costs down i need to buy professionally. Which means bulk. When I did this for non profits, and in professional camps, I had an exact number of people and could calculate costs. With this event I was 100% doing it at my cost. So wasn't trying to make a profit.

Feast refunds are being sent out.

Camping: This is still happening. So all other social things can move forward.

Fooding: Maybe a potluck is in order?
I can bring some food for a potluck. Can you share a camping headcount? Will we have an open fire in the evenings (and wood for it)? If so, I'd bring fixings for hobo packets (foil, cooked sausage/keilbasa, potatoes, onions, carrots, oil and spices) and uncoated paper plates that we can burn to miminize cleanup (I recommend bringing a frisbee to use with these plates).

If everyone who's currently camping attends, we'd be right around 10-12 people.

I already got that Friday off, so planning on camping Friday night and Saturday night....Probably just bring a bunch of big flies if anyone wants any.

I'll just plan on doing what I normally do for food. sammich stuff, breakfast stuff, perhaps if I'm feeling crazy, throw in the gas bbq and sous vide up something else for a dinner......

Maybe we only need the group campsite, and not the shelter near the boat launch? That could save some money. I'm keeping my Site 48 on the water (about halfway between the group site and the boat ramp area) and people can use Site 48 to launch small craft if the group site doesn't have decent water access.
