NFR Renaming the I-90 Bridge near Vantage

Non-fishing related
Color me kinda' slow on the uptake this morning, as in, I don't get it. A bridge, among the most utilitarian of structures. A two-fer, as in, we get a utilitarian bridge and a monument for the price of one. More fitting, IMO, would be a monument dedicated entirely to honoring those who performed these acts of heroism. Monuments and memorials like the various war memorials and others in Washington, D.C. I'm not opposing the naming, just sharing the initial thought that popped into my head as I read the article.

I think it's all in the eye of the beholder. What reminds you of something? What tugs at your heart and helps you appreciate life?

Naming bridges, streets, etc after people/things doesn't really do it for me. But I admit that I've had feels every time I've been at the vietnam memorial. Something about the place and the design and all the names... It is built to make you think and feel and it very much does that.

But everyone is different. If a bridge reminds folks of one sacrifice or another, that's fine too.

Changing a name should be cheap.

Wonder how much money it will cost?

I would hope that given the current national fiscal situation, MOH recipients would prefer that a cash-strapped WA state would not spend millions to build a new monument, but use that money to fund schools and food banks. I'm generously assuming these heroes acted to preserve the people of the USA and not the often dubious goals of our government.

I mean, I guess if the Medal of Honor itself somehow isn't enough, this at least seems like an easy way to honor them without exorbitant new spending that could be otherwise used for the health and welfare of their children and grandchildren.

Just my two cents.

One advantage on naming a bridge is that many people will see it as they pass by. A simple reminder to all that hopefully provokes a little thought and gratitude as they drive over it.

Monuments can certainly be more powerful, but people need to plan to visit them.

That is exactly what I was thinking.

If we are going to waste time and money on stupid shit like this, may as well name it The Bridge of America!

Tacoma Narrows - Galloping Gerty
I-90 Floating Bridge - Fallen Heroes

Oh they're spending money on it alright. I crossed it last Tuesday and construction had us down to 25 mph and a carefully controlled set of lanes. It looked like expansion joint and general deck/ road bed repair
