SFR The Real ID Requirements Are Just Around The Corner

The Real ID requirements take effect in less than a month, May 7th to be exact and it's surprising how many people that I've spoken with that are unaware. If you don't have it or a passport two of the biggies are that you will no longer be able to fly domestically or enter federal buildings. BTW, the WA Enhanced Driver's license qualifies as a Real ID.

Unless you're a hermit or afraid of seeing the rest of the world, people should have a passport.
Maybe, but you shouldn't be carrying it around everywhere - the Real ID is just a modified drivers license - just goes in your wallet as your DL.

My passport and my wife's are both expired for so long that we need to reapply. I see there is now an option to get a passport and a "passport card" for a small extra fee. I'm going to go with that option.

I didn’t have an issue with the real ID, I just couldn’t bring myself to pay an extra fee on top of the list of options last time I renewed my DL for something that wasn’t required. For now I guess I’ll keep using my PP when I fly.

I'd recently lost my DL skiing. Went to health department to get Birth Certificate (I knew where it was and did move it, i thought), took new mail to DOL for address change, and had an old license and SS card.
Walked right in, only one there, done in a few minutes, and already got it in the mail.
Don't plan to fly, or leave the country, but why not.

They ask for ID while skiing? Seems odd.

Had it and my debit card in a small wallet. I think after cheeseburger and fry lunch I must not have zipped my pocket properly.
Boner move, I left my gloves on the roof of the car first trip too. I know better.
I see I can now link my debit to my ski pass, so I can leave everything else in the car like I should have in the first place.

I've been surprised at the number of people that refuse to get one.
It's 2025 - if you still think that refusing the new ID will somehow protect you from "surveillance", you haven't been paying attention to everything from cars to phones to credit cards. That ship sailed.
Why would I rush our to get a new ID when I have a passport?

I have no idea. What in the world does this have to do with anything I wrote?
You said "I've been surprised at the number of people that refuse to get one."

I, like others, refuse to go get and pay for a "Real ID" years ahead of the expiration date of my regular driver's licence, because my PP card serves the same function.
That's all. It's not a principled stand against "surveillance" 😆

The problem is that they are placing the blame/ responsibility on the wrong party.
They should require that all state issued ID meet or exceed the real ID standards
They already require that all states offer Real ID. (Some still also offer noncompliant ID also, as an option, for whatever reason.)
It's only an issue because WA DLs can be good for up to 8 years. I think upgrading it is prorated based on expiration, but you still have to do the WDOL office thing.

You can travel to Canada by driving with WA. Real ID card. If you fly into Canada you will need a passport.

Best check well beforehand to make sure you have the correct type of ID. (or get a passport)
