For the last couple of months the joint where my thumb meets the wrist has been pretty painful. Using a pen or pencil is excruciating. This is on my right hand. I had work done on my left hand years ago but that surgeon has long since retired. I'm looking for recommendations, preferably from Everett north.
 
Same here with the pain in both. Last year it affected my fishing just catching trout when I lost a net overboard. I am also considering surgery after not being able to hang on to a hammer. I missed the nail more than I hit the head and dropping it while on a ladder. Hope you find a good surgeon.
 
This is kind of a specialty, you might/should consider a broader area to look in. I have had good luck with Proliance Surgeons. They have offices all over the Seattle area. Yeah, I know, it is a drive but it is your dominant hand. You really want specialists that to a LOT of the surgery/care you are seeking. People who do many a week not a few a year.

I know people like to start close to home and avoid traffic, that being said I am willing to drive to a better choice. I have been using OPAORTHO Orthopedic Physician Associates for years! I had knee work, and replacement (wife just used them also) and my casting shoulder.

I would recommend the office...

They have a big hand department... and locations

Get the best surgeon you can get. Seattle is so lucky to have so many great doctors, specialists, hospitals and a teaching university.

Don't worry about the drive. You will not be driving after the surgery anyways....

The quality of surgical skill in Seattle surpasses most other areas.
For hand surgery, a fellowship trained hand surgeon...
 
Wayne, have you considered a non-invasive procedure to start with? A massage therapist who specializes in deep tissue may be able to help you without having surgery. My wife is a therapist and I’m gonna have her work on both my thumbs after I goofed them up last month.

OPA did my 94 yo aunt’s hip and did a great job in 2023.
The old grumpy aunt still going strong 😆. She has a few more years left as her sister just passed at 104. My mom lived till 97.
 
I initially read the title as:

Orthopedic Sturgeon​

...and I was thinking "well that's something new"

On my left hand the joint was bone on bone from over use for decades. As a carpenter that was the 'hold-it-hand' They managed to harvest a tendon from my lower arm to replace the worn ligament. The guy who did the surgery was known as one of the best around and had recently un-retired because they couldn't find a guy to replace him. But he's gone now.

Funny you mention that.
The cast I had to wear made it impossible to do simple things like button my pants, (thank gawd for sweats!) and grip anything. If you extend your arm and point your thumb so it is inline with the fore arm and drop your fingers towards the ground, that is the position the cast puts your hand in.

About four weeks into my cast wearing from the last procedure I went to renew my drivers license. They told me I had to take the driving test to make sure I could drive with the cast on. "I drove down here with it!" Didn't matter, had to test anyway. So we climbed into my work van and took off. I hand the window down and my left arm with the cast leaning on the door. She told me if I didn't drive with both hands on the wheel I was going to fail. "Okay." Clunk goes the cast onto the top of the steering wheel. There was no way I could grip the wheel with the type of cast I was wearing. Then I asked her how my one-armed neighbor the school teacher got her license - silence.
 
My wife had some tendons rearranged on her right thumb by this guyIMG_8348.jpegas you can see it was a couple years ago. She’s still happy with what was done
