What's your favorite console fish/depth finder/charter thingy?

My new old boat didn't come with a finder in the console. Former owner kept it. Any favorites out there?

Any I should avoid? What size? 5", 7", 9"?

This is what I have to work with

He left the base in there, but I'm assuming a new one will probably have it's own base.

Thanks!

I'm a Garmin fanboy. I have the GPSMap 9" in my ocean boat, and the ECHOMap 9" in my 16 foot boat. The ECHOMap is plenty for most applications and would recommend either for just about anything.

For a lot of guys, even the Stryker series would get the job done.

I'd also measure your available space. Get the biggest one you can fit. i wouldn't hesitate to cut a wider hole if need be, but you obviously are limited in that, too.

I agree. I went with a 5" on my last purchase and really wish I would have gone with a 7". In the store and holding something right in front of me or looking at a demo on the shelf a 5" seems like more than enough. But then I get out in the sun, and I am standing up, maybe a few feet away, and suddenly I can't even tell what I am looking at. The easier it is to see and read the more you will use and enjoy it.

At some point if finances allow, I'd love to move my ocean boat up to a 12". The 9 is fine, but I run split screen a lot and those extra inches go a long ways.

I’m with Evan on this one. The majority of boats I come in contact on a weekly basis are running Garmin units, most with side scan capabilities. What I’ve seen on friends vessels I would almost consider cheating.

I don't even know now to use side scan. I just use the chartplotter map and sonar.

A very familiat looking console. I got a good price on a Humminbird helix 7. I haven’t used it yet, but since humminbird upgraded their stuff and discontinued support for Helix units, prices are dropping and features are pretty good….gps, spotlock, charting, interface with my minnkota.

They are just updated bottom machine/sonar views, basically 3D, some of which the sending unit can bolt right to a trolling motor. Garmin has some great units. Whole new world down there.

Oh I fully know what it is. I mean I can't figure out how to make it useful.

Same here on Garmin. My advice is to get the biggest screen that you can. I have a 19' and fish off of the back end, but my screen is over the console. It can be hard to see at times.
