Spey rod#6

Looks like it will be a great rod. Dennis are you hollowing out the long bamboo spey rods to keep the weight down? Whose taper are you using.

Yes I scallop the butt section and mid sections to reduce weight. I started using hardwood lower handles to help with the balance. I started basing my taper from a Bob Clay rod and have made adjustments as I go. So far I have built a couple 12ft 9 inch 7/8 and a 12ft 9 inch 6 weight which i haven’t cast yet. This rod looks to be around 13 1/2 ft for a 7/8. I will turn the handle tomorrow and if the finish I cured enough I will but it together and give it a swing. I just put it up next to my 13 ft 3 inch 7 weight Clay rod and it’s real close to the dimension. In the near future we are going to get together and cast all the rods I built and see what lines best match them. I’m going to need to get a bunch of lines as I start building more of these.

Thanks guys for your kind words, as I progress with learning how to build these rods I try something new on each rod. This rod I really like how it feels and it doesn’t feel heavy to me. By using hardwood lower handle and down locking reel seat it helps with balance. The swing weight and recovery is nice so I think it will be a fun rod to fish. Now I hope it hits my line weight target and proves to be a good fishing rod.

So cool!
