Good Glass

is that a dig at my "working man's" tuna and carp boats?

no. Because you’re boats are WAAYYYYY fancier than mine
I'd be interested in a glass tuna rod, something a foot shorter than my 9' carbon fiber.... I wonder about one with a foregrip? (There might be one or more out there.)

What Randy said! The only other new, modern glass 12wt is Epic’s 8’ 6”

Does Lamiglass still make those slow "honey" glass blanks? Pretty sure they were made in the USA. "Good" is a matter of preference though, they are slooooow.

Yeah, I'm not gonna settle for anything that's longer than 8'. I'm obviously in no rush to get it, so either I get some spare change to justify a Steffen, or something else rolls along in the budget/used category that fits my criteria.

Mike McFarland rolls heavyweight blanks. He's got the now defunct Seele mandrels (I think they were his to begin with). He's got an 8'2" 12wt and 14wt 2pc, but also does custom work.

I also have the 8'2" Seele version of the 12wt and it's a beast. Not terrible to cast with a 750gr head & and absolute fish tamer....could always reach out to him and see if he could roll something shorter as well. But man, I love my Steffen for a little more versatility.

But yeah, agree with Evan in that just about anything longer than 8' above 8wt isn't as fun (outside of a few exceptions).

I have the feeling I wouldn't like a price tag of a custom 8'2" Seele

I got a deal on the blank and then had a local builder finish it out. But, McFarland's are right in line with current mid-priced rods.

Next Year, I'll have to let you take my Seele with you....only way the Steffen is going is with me....

Maybe if he'd hack off like 1" from each section to make the whole thing 4" shorter, I'd be more inclined to consider it :ROFLMAO:

Meant to say the only other 12s that I know of—thank you for correcting me!!

Looks like they do

Are there any pros/cons associated with the brands mentioned above that one should be aware of? Have very little glass experience, but thinking about dabbling.

From a build quality standpoint—no. But it really depends on what you want. The nice thing about glass is that the actions are SO varied. The biggest thing to think about is if ou want e or s glass. And from there, what type of taper, and then how much you want to spend on fit and finish.

Tough thing is because most of the higher end ones aren't available in any fly shop so you can't really sample any sort of lineup.

Do I smell a glass clave happening in the near future?

USA Made Glass Blanks
,,…
Tom Morgan (not sure who rolls his?)
.,,..
Kerry Burkheimer used to, and may still. I broke the tip section of my Morgan 7wt glass (“Unity” rod) after Tom passed. I knew he and Kerry were close friends so eventually reached out. He made an identical new tip as an honor to his old pal. I’m still in his debt and a fan.
As to glass, in addition to the Morgan 7, I have Epics in 4, 5 and 6 (NZ rods, not sure where they’re rolled), a Barclay 470, a McFarland 5wt (6 pc travel) and a 7wt Fenwick. I’ve had and liked Steffens (3, 4 and 5/6) but they found new homes. I like faster rods too, but the soul of a good glass rod wins often.
