New ugly stik……

Not sure why but I made another “real” cane rod this week…..it started out lime green when Tom cut it down so I wrapped it with puke green thread. Black “real” bamboo reelseat with brass pipe bands and has a semi fast action. Great for chucking indicators and dries. I devirginized it yesterday with 23 trout and some nice crappies! One of my straighter ugly stiks……

I’m not sure why again but I made another one….this time the “most” crooked! What a giant pain in my ass to wrap…..I might need some professional help….. :-O

Too windy to lawn cast today…..should be interesting, the “curve” dictated where the guide placement went. This one is sideways to the regular position of the nodes….we’ll see!?

Reminds me of the custom "acid wrap" rods made by Eric Kunz some years back for Cali fishermen. There, the guides were spiraled around the blank.

Hey Dennis, the champagne cork grip was just as much of a pain to install. There’s a crooked node right underneath the grip….so after turning the grip, while fitting it, the glue joints came apart because of the node plus the crooked spot. But…..I wasn’t too mad because I had to sand an angle on the corks to make them fit…..yes, lots of work for a ugly stick!

Well alrighty then! Today I devirginized this crooked mess with 6 rainbows 14”-18” The first one on a black leech, next on a midge soft hackle, another sight casting with a red chironomid, then two on a damsel nymph and the last one on the black leech all on a dry line! Easily and accurately casts 50’! Funny sighting down this thing! It really bends with a nice fish….thought it might get some straight sets in it….

Fishing with the ugliest stik so far has been a real pleasure! Sight casting #18 emergers on target without a false cast….couldn’t ask for anything better! Today on a west fly fishing only lake I C&R’d 26 nice rainbows with this stik! Tom as my witness! Impressed with it not breaking…..
