The demand for power is ever increasing. The demand in Central Washington has grown rapidly with all of its "cheap" power (data farms/bitcoin - Port District expansion) and the local utilities are scrambling to design, permit and build those damn transmission lines that provide power to our homes and internet feeds (and those big power users). You're exactly right, I don't want a 500 kv line in my back yard; on the other hand, I do want the electricity. It is not well known that the biggest issue facing folks who want to build power plants (solar, wind, coal, nuclear, doesn't matter) is that you also have to build infrastructure to move that electricity to the nation. Folks who are NIMBY about wind turbines also don't like transmission lines running through their neighborhoods. I know for fact that several proposed wind farms in the Dakotas were abandoned because of the issue bringing the transmission infrastructure up to snuff. So, to utilize the existing but no longer needed transmission lines is a big money saver.
