Baja November 2024: Looking for boat/guide info

Gal, doggo, and I are heading down to Baja for ~4wks from late Oct to late Nov. We're bringing surf boards, SUPs, and I'm bringing a bunch of fishing gear.

Gear-wise I think I'm set (2x 8wt/10wt/12wt w/ floaters and intermediate to fast sink) and probably not enough flies but such is life.

Gal doesn't fish so I'm on my own in that dept. Besides beach and SUP fishing I'd like to spend some time on boats (esp. if we make to Mag Bay) but it seems like most of the outfits I've found are week-long all-inclusive packages; we'll be in our truck and self-contained so no need for all of that.

If anyone has any recommendations to find other anglers to join to cut down on costs, or guides to recommend, I'd love any info. We have a loose itinerary and plan on spending time on both coasts. Any must hits/must avoids are also welcome. Feel free to DM.

Thanks in advance!

My friend does that sort of trip to Baja a couple times a year, and tries to keep it in balance between reasonable cost and quality fishing, and arranges it all on his own. I'll check in with him on recommendations for guides and spots and DM you back.

A few other thoughts - the biggest savings on a guide/boat is if you can split the cost with someone else. Yeah, I know not much help. You could also probably do some fishing on the Cortez side from a pontoon. I've seen spots in the summer with dorado and roosters hitting bait within easy pontoon distance.

Yep, the biggest challenge for my fishing is going to be finding someone to split boat costs with since I'll be on my own in that dept. So if you need a 3rd or 4th when you're in Mag Bay... ;)

I'm probably going to rig up some sort of bucket/basket for an anchor and gear for fishing from the SUP on the east side. I can see getting towed/blown to Guaymas if I'm not too careful.

I was sure our third guy was going to flake, but he did send in the deposit money after a few reminders. But I'll check again. It seems like a fourth person should be possible also, will check on that.

Oh, and if you do get blown to Guaymas at least you'll have some good yellowtail fishing there :).

I have a couple of contacts for Mag Bay. My brother and I have fished with different outfits over the past two years:

"Baja Bob" Hoyt runs day trips out of Puerto Aldolfo Lopez Mateo. Actually, his son (I forget his name) is more likely to be captaining the boat. They were nice to work with and fly fish friendly but not necessarily the best at communication. (This seems to be a common theme in Mexico) Phone is 1+760-908-2252

Rodrigo "Roddy" Garcia is a local and runs boats with his dad Sergio. Their English is limited, but decent guys to deal with and also tuned into fly fishing. Best way to contact Roddy is through WhatsApp at +52 613 109 1127

I think we paid about $500 per day for the two of us.

I'll PM you my brother's contact info. There's a good chance he will be in Loreto by the for the winter residency and would have recommendations for local guides. I didn't find any of the Loreto guides he's worked with to be real fly savvy. He might also be into getting out for a day and splitting costs or meeting up for a kayak adventure.

minor hijack. will be in los barilles in mid to late feb. any decent fishing that time of year ??

Francisco, aka FlyFishLoreto, has been very good to us.

Editing to add that Mark Bachmann had some posts on the the fly fishing shop blog that named some other guides. Might be a little stale but that’s another potential source.
