Stuff in the Sky

Currently in Central Michigan on part 2 of our trek. It's not the stuff IN the sky, but rhe stuff COMING FROM the sky. Last night had a lot of illicit fireworks that kept the campground up well after midnight. Today, it's torrential rain that's not supposed to stop for 36 hours..

Meteor came screaming my way when I was shooting the aurora a few nights back. Another great night of northern lights. This is due west so you know they were good to the north as well.

Aurora…..Perseids…..Dipper……OH MY!!

Bonus Points! Great work

There's a G3 Storm Watch for 16 September due to an X class flare which occurred earlier today. Here are some details:
(Being a wize azz) Wait, SpaceX is causing weather issues now ?

Aurora is supposed to be visible here in Central PA (Band B viewing) but over cast has kept that from happening.
I'd gone to the ranger station look out at Sand Bridge, just east of R B Winter State Park. From that vantage point i should have been able to catch the special moon and its eclipse, but again, overcast

Here's a cellphone (Samsung S22 Ultra) shot of last night's Supermoon, with help from "Deep learning" AI (more here: Samsung AI and the moon), and onboard photo tools -- the original image was cropped, with light balance, brightness, contrast, highlights, shadows, and exposure manipulation done, then finally colorized, just because I could :D.

For those of you with a dark sky and a clear view of the eastern horizon, check out Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, a little before dawn from tomorrow AM though Monday, should be visible to the necked eye. Unfortunately, I have not yet discovered a good viewing location here in the Poconos and the weather forecast is cloudy. After Monday, it will disappear, but should re-emerge after dusk in the Western sky on October 12.

Happy comet hunting.

cheers

Alert!!! Another possible very bright necked-eye comet is on the way - projected to be brighter than Venus and comparable to 2011 Comet Lovejoy!!!

Update: The new comet has now officially been designated " Comet C/2024 S1 (ATLAS) - stay tuned, with any luck it will be a stunner.

Cheers

The beat goes on with this very active solar cycle. An X class solar flare was unleashed yesterday and is predicted to arrive sometime on the 10th/11th. NOAA has issued a G4 Severe Storm watch for that period. We could get a repeat of May 10th with northern lights visible at lower latitudes across the US. Stay tuned! https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/news/g4-severe-storm-watch-10-11-october
