Life of the Party
On Tuesday I hit an eastern wa lake looking for bass, walleye, carp, and anything else willing to play. A mix of dirtbag gear and fly fishing. Most fish caught were on the fly rod. Trolling plugs from my kayak usually produce well at this lake, but not this day. Just one 18 inch walleye (dinner) and a few small bass. The rest all took my flies. Mainly leach and streamers.

I came in late Monday night. Caught a nice sunset spiced up a bit by the wildfires.

Got on the water as the sun was just about to peak over the horizon. I was looking forward to a 16-hour day in the heat fishing my butt off.

There are a few spots where I ditch the kayak and walk into. This one spot has a 30fr by 60 foot stagnant little 'pond' I have walked by before. This time I thought I might as well put a cast into it and see what happens. Right away I got busted to by 2 good sized largemouth bass right next to the bank where I approached from - hidden by some branches. Tried to entice them, but no love. So I sent the medium sized streamer into the middle, strip, strip - BAM. I watched something came up from the depths, grab it, and turn to go back down. Hook set and fish on! Smallie? Nope, was a gorgeous red sided rainbow of about 17 inches.

Soooooo many carp. The bite was good early in the morning, but I didn't spent too much time targeting them.

I was impressed with the workout these carp gave my 8wt Sage VPS. Never felt over-gunned once and was so happy I talked myself out of just bringing my 5wt.
This chunky carp took a long olive bunny leach with stinger hook I tied years ago. I was targeting the smallies in this spot, and chucked the fly about a foot away from the carp and took a few short strips. He came right over and sucked it in with zero hesitation.

Report 2: We have a family friend who is a Vietnam vet who just turned 80 years old. Marine sniper. Multiple purple hearts for getting shot up a few times. Great guy. We were talking and he said his son was coming up from California and they wanted to go fishing. Was asking where there might be some bank access or somewhere I could point them for a chance at some fish. Neither fish very often, but did it a lot when they were young and just wanted to spend a day fishing together. I really couldn't think of a spot to send them this time of year where they would catch fish and be safe on the bank without a lot of hiking, rock hopping, etc. And I knew they didn't really have gear ready to go. So I offered to take them to my favorite lake where I love taking my kids. They were excited. Since they hadn't fished for years and their fly rod skills rusty - and I was going to have them on a boat, we all agreed dirt bag gear fishing would be fine. They just wanted a chance to catch fish anyway they could. So off we went.

We rented a pontoon boat so they could walk, sit, and have plenty of room. On the water by about 8am.

Fishing was sloooow for the first 2 hours. A few small perch and one trout trolling 3 rods. Not looking good.

We ended up anchoring in 2 spots. Both started producing and we all ended up with trout limits. Biggest one about 17 inches this time.

Highlight 1 - having them both double up on trout.
2 - all the eagles and ospreys
3 - Jack, the 80 year old, did something I have never seen before. He was trying to set the hook on a bobber down. Kept missing the fish. So he started reeling in and tge fish hit again. But as he was bringing it in, I saw his bobber trailing the fish by a good 15 feet. Weird. So he pulls it close and I quickly net it. No hook in the mouth. Just line wrapped around it. It was like it flossed itself and rolled in the line and managed to tangle itself. So Jack is now a true trout wrangler since he actually lasso'd a trout.

I loved the report and pics and especially the part about getting the old man out on the water and having him catch some fish. Really good stuff! But I suspect that you were in Central Washington, not Eastern Washington. I live in Eastern Washington and there is nothing like that over here!;)

Everything east of Snoqualmie Pass is EWA...or so think the multitudes living in the Pugetopolis.

I'll chime in here. If there was ever a thread that portrayed the "love" that is infused with sport fishing......this would be one of them. How can your heart not soar after viewing this thread? I thank the OP.
