New Idaho Invasive Species Regulations

Last trip over, it was after govt working hours and the inspection sites were closed, just like the one in Cle elum.

New regs for out of state watercraft.

While I'm at it I might as well mention Montana's IS requirements for non-residents.
Yes , going back , and forth from Henry’s, I have to stop if I want to go back south to a gas station or whatever , got one there on highway 20 . Asked the other day I’m going to the gas station across the street , then I’m turning around and going back into Montana where we are staying , do I have to stop again , yes . So ten minutes later I had to stop again , but she more or less just waved me thru . I believe it used to be inspection, and decontamination, then went to just inspect, and handing you a piece of paper , now looks like the decontamination again .

I’ve been thru them three times in the last two weeks , it will be interesting to see if they got the decontamination setup , last week they hadn’t yet .

That $30 Montana non resident AIS has been a requirement for a few years now , no sticker , just proof of purchase , or load the Montana fish , and wildlife app , to have it on there with your license .

In that case, I wonder how one would go about getting the required invasive species sticker?

Yes $30 motorized Montana , $30 for Idaho for the invasive sticker non resident. To fish Montana , and Idaho I have nearly $300 invested .

Has anyone seen info about where Idaho will have inspection stations? I live about 3 miles from the Idaho border and the only place I use my drift boat locally is on the Clearwater in Idaho, but I'm out of state. Hopefully they will have a well-staffed inspection station right in Lewiston before the steelhead get in the river later this summer!

The Montana inspection can be a pain, not the process itself, but because of the hours they're closed during prime "leave after work and drive into the night to fish the next morning" hours.

My son lives in Lewiston so I can understand your plight. @up2nogood presented a similar situation that I know is apain but gave me a chuckle. The whole thing doesn't see to be very well planned out and becomes a real pain with the station closure times. I've always thought the whole program is rather futile unless they were open around the clock...of course we all know that invasive species don't travel at night. :ROFLMAO:

I wasn’t aware of any inspection stations in Montana ? I travel thru Island Park in Idaho on the way to Montana on highway 20 , then turn off 20 by Henry’s lake onto highway 87 , that enters Montana right after Henry’s , no inspection there or when turn onto 287 that either goes up towards Quake lake or the other way to Ennis , Mt.

Lots of stations... one just west of Regis, One on 93 @Ravalli, one near Anaconda, one west of Helena, one between Billings and Hardin just to name a few that I'm aware of.

Coming to Montana thru Island Park , ID there are two routes entering Montana staying on highway 20 headed into West Yellowstone, MT or the route I go turning off onto highway 87 .You can’t enter Montana to where I’m going without having to get inspected in Idaho , kinda makes sense why have a Montana inspection in this area .

Yes, and I understand the requirement to be that you MUST have the boat inspected before entering the water if you're coning from out of state, not just that you have to stop if they're open. I've never been checked at a river, but don't want to be in violation if I ever do.

I seem to remember a provision in the MT rules that they'll accept an inspection record from a neighboring state if you haven't used the boat since, but I need to read the rules again before I go to MT in a few weeks.

That would make sense on having a valid inspection from a neighboring state. That is indeed true , having a valid inspection from Idaho ,with the paper to proof it ,you are okay in Montana .

I was just in Montana trailering a boat all over the place and we stopped at all watercraft stations between Cle elum and Fort Smith, MT with several rivers fished in between. There is one on the bighorn that we had to stop at before and after we floated. We asked and yes it’s mandatory. Thankfully the inspections are very quick with a drift boat or raft, quicker if your anchor can be inspected easily and is fairly clean. We only waited in line once and even with that we were out of there within 10 minutes. While we were at the one in Idaho off 90 another truck trailering a boat drove by without stopping and the inspector was quick to call that in. Not worth the ticket. Small inconvenience to fish rivers that are open and flush with fish :)

Just one we encountered in mid April fishing the Bighorn , between Bozeman , and Fort Smith , if I remember it was before Hardin .

I am 100% fine with getting my boat checked.

I am 100% against having to wait to do so in banking hours. If you want to inspect it have a station available.
This is my complaint, specially that bankers' hours that some of the stations are open. Waiting in line for 1 or 2 other boats to get checked isn't a big deal, but having to give up part of a day of fishing in order to be going past an inspection station when they're actually open is a problem.

And yet, lots of boats pass by them during closed hours with no issue...makes no sense.
