Last fall I witnessed an incredible hatch of these giant Hex which seemingly brought up every fish in the lake.

Today it appears they are already starting:

I watched a red wing black bird delicately snatch one up. This is the only lake I have ever seen these on.

One 5 pound largemouth and missed a hell of a smallmouth.

Now I want to try for a dry fly carp one of these days. A golden stimulator would probably imitate one of these quite well? I wonder if crappie can be had too. Certainly got my mind rolling seeing them come off again...

I bet you are stoked. I would be.

Hope you get to sleep and dream about them too...

Hexagina Limbata is an important fly here in New England. They range in color from full yellow to brown/yellow combo. The hatch moves North starting in Southern New England about Early-Mid June and continues up North through mid-July. The normal hatch time is about 45-60 minutes before sunset, but there are some lakes & ponds with sub-species that come out around 2-3p.

Yellow drake flies work well, but when the fish are really onto the hatch, almost any light color mayfly will work

Back in Vermont I fished a big cream Usual for the Hex hatch. After dark, for big small mouth.

I've seen a few come off at Merwin, but nothing like a blanket hatch....and no musky has ever cared.

That's outstanding, Billy!

The few times that I have fished a hex hatch, I have done much better with an emerger/cripple pattern than with a high floating dry. I like to fish them both at once, using the big dry as a sighter - because it is generally getting dark when they start hatching.

I’ve been up on Timothy for the hex hatch, and it can be wild. Watching smaller trout trying to drown them. Worse is when the bats come out and yelling at them to not take it.

I was out on a canoe at sunset last year during a blanket hatch. it sounds like it was raining with all the fish rising around us.
