Bamboo Fling June 9th - what'cha bringing?

Sunday June 9th, Annual Bamboo "Fling" gathering for our Puget Sound area...What'cha going to bring? My likely rods:

1. Leonard 50D. This is an 8' Leonard that is a four weight medium action rod. A light 8' rod that is my ideal for casting dries on smaller streams.

2. Phillipson glass - a rare, sought after 7-1/2' M76L (L for light version). Most M76 Phillipsons are six weights but they made a handful in this lighter five weight version. It was severely beat up when found and I eventually stripped it down to bare glass and rebuilt it. I discovered the glass pieces are two different colors and it's a bit of an oddball aesthetically, but it's a nifty casting medium-fast, not fast, rod. I recently found a correct length Phillipson tube which I think was from the same era, but might be from a few years earlier than this M76L was made. It looks like a shotgun sheath. Leave it to Bill Phillipson to lend a funky style to his great gear.

3. Goodwin Granger Favorite "8642GF." This is a rod that hovers around four or five weight depending on one's mood and need that day. I'll probably put a five on it for the cast around simply because my only four weight will be hanging on the Leonard already and the Leonard is just a tad light action than the GF8642. These Goodwin Granger era rods made when Goodwin was still alive are a bit slower, smoother compared to the post WWII Wright McGill era Grangers which are great rods in their own right. I last fished this during overlapping hatches of BWO's, caddis and occasional larger mayflies last fall on the Metolius and it helped me catch my first Metolius rainbow.

Looking forward to seeing old and new friends and sampling all the great rods out there.

I'll be bringing a personal taper 8'4" 5wt Dual Para, 7'10" 7wt Dual Para, Para 14, 7'9" 5wt, Sir D 7' 4wt, Martha Marie 7'6" 5 wt, Leonard 50D 8' 5wt, and a couple more copies of tapers all made by me. I'm looking forward to this again, fun time to cast many different tapers to consider for my next rod making efforts this winter.

Mike, I'd like to hear more about your "Dual Para" tapers, and definitely cast your Leonard 50D 8' 5 wt to compare it to mine. I've read that the 50D's were normally a 5 wt with a few exceptions falling into the 4 wt range so I'm curious to learn more. Ron

Can someone make an informational post in the "events" forum about the Fling?

My taper is similar in the stress graphs to Ray Gould's RR166 and his RR171. My first attempt to design a similar taper at 7'10" in a 5wt turned out to be happy with a 6 or 7wt line instead. I met Ray for lunch one day in Bothell and he cast the first try and cast the new taper after lunch at a local park. I was really proud to have him cast the rod and have him compliment me on my taper. Then, a few years later I decided to give it another try in 2022 to make it a 5wt and stretch it to 8'4" long. The 5wt was glued up with resorcinol, an old school glue. The taper casts short to medium distances mostly off the tip section but as you increase the amount of line cast the base taper begins to kick in. It really likes a brisk double haul when you want to reach out for the long casts. I've made a second one for a friend and it has become his favorite taper (I think he owns three of my rods now).

I'll be interested in your feedback on both the rods Ron.

I'm also intrigued by the 8'4" length. It seems like in most things we gravitate toward the "big round numbers"...as fly rods were developed over time that became 7', 8', and 9', with a lot of 7-1/2', a fair number of 8-1/2' and a handful of 9-1/2' models. But perhaps an 8'4" is ideal for fishing waters like the upper forks of the Bitterroot, or the Metolius or Crooked rivers. And I find myself in larger waters like the Sauk feeling under-gunned with my 8-1/2' but unhappy swinging a full 9' (with a nod to Dave who knows no rod too long or too heavy)...perhaps an 8'8" would be ideal for me. Kudos for breaking out of the standard lengths.

Okay I will bring one a 6' 9" Constable
I have a three piece Leonard made Model 50 (Not a 50D) that someone might be interested in.
I also Have a Ray Gould made RR166. It has a terrible bend in the butt section that I haven't gotten around to fixing but it is still basically castable
I also have an 8' 5-6wt rod made by my late friend Jerry Foster. Its a smooth casting progressive taper .

I haven't made any rods in the last year or more. Partially due to getting distracted by other things and partially by an injury. I hope to get back to it soon.

Put me down to cast Ray's RR166, I don't remember casting it last year if you brought it. That being said I don't remember a lot of things now in my older years, must be the signs of the misspent years of my youth🤣

Every time we do this I look forward to a great time, and every time I go it's even better than expected. Thanks guys for hanging out and sharing your amazing fly rods today. Great to see old and new friends. There were so many great rods, but my personal favorites were Mike Monsos' 8'4" and Dan's (or was it Dave's?) "John Gerach" by Mike Clark. Wow to both!

Ron
