Nooksack river closed all summer... who knows the story behind this?

Very crappy day for northsounders. The Nooksack river is mostly closed to fishing all summer (until 9/30). Mainstem opens end of July, but all three forks will be closed through Sept.

Where did this come from? The listed reason is "Necessary for the protection of spring Chinook and wild steelhead." How does that take all summer?

EDIT: See this post for comments from a WDFW spokesperson.

I think we should just accept the fact that there will be no fishing for steelhead. Easy expectation to meet.

Should it open then we should rejoice because our expectations were exceeded.

Heartbreaking shit. Especially considering the netting throughout the system that's been going on for a month now, when steelhead are actually present in the system. A lot of people here have swung a lot of flies in the sack, anyone ever caught an August steelhead? July?

Theyll make poachers or birders out of all of us eventually.

I am sorry Josh! Hell for anyone up there that enjoys that area for that matter. Crumby news.

It's been a few years now (pre-covid), but a couple treaty tribal reps said they'd like to see no non-treaty fishing in the anadromous zones of PS rivers. It's getting closer. If you think actions over-ride lip service, you've already concluded that WDFW Director Susewind is not on the side of freshwater angling in rivers.

Great job WDFW you saved 10 fish from untold harm provided they navigate the day of the net. Bring on the grizzlies. I hope all hunters and political rivals are eaten by them and then we can all rejoice on the NPR Facebook page about our victory. Mitch Friedman will be sharing his recipes for vegan tacos and we can all live in a harmony devoid of evil hunters, anglers, and extractive users of the faux wild we've created. Yes we created it.

Let’s be real. The tribes would eliminate non-treaty fishing everywhere for anything valuable if they could.

I do not think it would be as impactful as the Boston Tea Party but if a lady or gent of quality stature were to go out and wet a line out there, and then pickup garbage on the way back, I do not think I would tattle on you. I once told a police officer that just because something is a law does not necessarily make it right. He agreed with me, then gave me my ticket.

This should be in the HUMOR thread… 😁

The real question is 'does the WDFW have a policy' ?

I love that the Skagit is open "because of their abundance of hatchery fish." The nooksack (both north and south fork) have hatchery surpluses of multiple thousands of fish, and a greater proportion of hatchery fish to wild fish than the Skagit has. Lummi has a little more political dick to swing than the sauk suiattle apparently.

Fish wars par deux: electric tribal revenge buglaoo.

If it comes to be that all freshwater anadromous fishing is closed to non-treaty parties, then shut down the hatcheries. There should be no need for WDFW to spend state money to produce hatchery fish if their customers -- those who buy fishing licenses -- cant fish for them.
