Puget Sound

Looks like Sundays weather will make for a pleasant day on the canal. Do these high tides dissuade you from going because of the lack of beach? I plan to be there by boat and after reading this king tide mumbo jumbo wonder if the tides will keep the fish from being around. Or could it actually be a plus if the casting is in towards the shore and perhaps some cover along with real estate the fish seldom get to prowl.
This is your best chance to catch a fish off someone's front lawn!

Boy Kashf, I've been called a lot of things, but never skyrise. :ROFLMAO: I had a basketball coach and a youth leader that thought Stack was funny. My name is Stacy and I was 6' tall in like 7th grade so....yeah. I didn't like it. I won't even tell you my last name. Haha!

I was actually just gonna comment on your leader. Is that 3' of total leader? And what sort of line? In general...your nice sleek wet fly will cast best with most lines if your leader is nearly as long as your rod. So 9' rod and a 7-9' leader is probably what you want. Especially if you're fishing a floater. If fishing an intermediate I usually go with the 6-7' leader since my fly line is clear. Tippet is usually at least 18" and no longer than 3' of 6-10 lb fluoro or 8 lb Maxima Ultragreen. If I'm using an actual sinker I like a 5-6' leader total. About 2' of that 5-6' is my tippet.
Only 3' of leader might be spooking some fish, although SRCs aren't that wary, but the bigger issue is it's probably putting some clunkiness into your cast. That could be costing you distance, but more likely causing timing issues and less enjoyment. And maybe some splashy casts, which actually could scare SRCs.

Keep at it! Oh, and....wear your waders man!

Man not sure how I misread your username for this long :ROFLMAO: I was fishing an intermediate, I've been fishing a 3-5' leader the past couple trips I went out simply so I could strip closer to the fly, but good to know that you want a longer leader. Right now I've got around 3' of 12lb RIO tippet material tied on as my leader, to an actual tippet of 2' of 8lb maxima. Might tie a couple extra feet of maxima on to see if it casts better

Just run a straight leader. No need for a tapered leader. The knots just end up catching more salad. It will turn over fine even if you go up to say 9’. Use 10-12 lb, whatever you have lying around. It’s way overkill but I haven’t found cutts to be leader shy. It will also turn over better as well versus lighter test.

There’s a @skyrise on here too. I think he and @skyriver are in cahoots

Small flies and small fish this week. Hoping to head southwest Sunday and Monday and try my luck there. The last time I headed south I got skunked at same good spots I’ve had success at and I’m still seeing action at my local spots so it’s hard making that drive right now even if there’s a chance for better opportunity.

Noticed some rust forming on one of the guides on my Sage Foundation I bought in September which is a bummer considering I always freshwater rinse it after. Any advice on what to do? Maybe I’ll see some of you out there this weekend 👍🏻

We share the same local spots I think, i kinda feel the same way. I’m sure I’ll sing a different tune when I finally learn the south sound beaches, but it’s hard to say no to fishing 5 minutes from home when you know there are at least a few fish around

I’d just keep fishing it and not worry too much about the rust.

I think I saw you walking back as you were leaving a few days ago, maybe Monday. I was there for 30 minutes or so and then 3 other guys showed up within a few minutes of each other so I took off. Some jumpers but no tugs for me. I've fished there 3 times and have found it fishes okay but usually crowded. I'm really looking forward to the spring once the Cutts start leaving the S rivers and fishing some great looking North Sound beaches I've been exploring.

If you saw two guys with beanies that was me and my buddy! I haven’t actually fished here in Spring that much, I’ll definitely need to check out our local beaches during that time but with how weak our chum runs have been compared to the south, it’s tempting to make the drive. Purdy is purdy, but after seeing literally dozens of cutthroat gorging on chum fry over there last year I’ll probably fish it at least a little this outmigration

Fished south sound today, not one to be seen. Hate to say it but I might save the exploring for spring. Easy to stomach fishing and not catching anything driving 30-45 minutes, little bit harder driving 2 hours both ways plus the gas money. I imagine getting a catalog of which beaches hold fish and which don’t during the more productive months might get me a better idea of which beaches to build my winter catalog out of.

Can’t complain about the Mountain View at the second beach I fished though… sunset made the drive worth it

Slow day for me over three beaches. No picture worthy fish.
Could have caught a dog if I had tried, since I guess I was invisible to the stick thrower. After throwing the stick on top of my line and the dog swimming into it, she did ask me if I had caught anything. 😂
Lots of wood got reshuffled with the king tides and last weeks big rains. Good combo for new beach trash as well.
Even though fishing was slow, you couldn’t have asked for a nicer PNW fall day.

Log the date, tide, beach, time, fly etc. in a notepad on your phone or whatever journal you prefer. Gives you something to look back on and provides some sanity in taking a research approach to your time.

Stay close to streams right now worked well for me last and this yr so far. And preferably a small bay or cove that acts as a current sanctuary.

We sorta blanked out as well, took the boat out and covered a lot of beaches including some sure fire spots but encountered only one small guy between @jasmillo and I.
Very odd, water quality was nice and clear but was not moving much at all especially in the early morning.

While morning was a super high high, I think the following low tide was pretty middling at around ~7ft - maybe that’s why things were slower? That’s kind of the bummer about big winter tides, you lose most of the big flood tides to the dark.

Fishing on a rare but nice, winter day with beautiful views always makes up for not catching anything for me. Part of what makes the Great Northwest so special...

Yeah that’s what i was thinking, barely any current movement in the first two hours of flood at the second beach I fished

Burning gas, tolls, time, ferry money etc for a skunk is all part of the game. You can still learn some valuable stuff about various beaches even when it happens.
We might be seeing the beginnings of the winter doldrums for cutt fishing that seems to happen every year. Some years it happens earlier then others, but it is a real thing. They’ll switch over to small stuff or seem to have just disappeared. It can be frustrating and trying to figure it out at times can drive you crazy.
