The Schwartz defense buckled the 9ers today, as it has against all of Shanahan's teams for years now.

Can we revisit the Seahawks game for a minute? I'm not the student of football that some of you are, so maybe you can help me understand.

I've generally understood that Pete Carrol loves the running game. Seems like a good balance between run and pass makes for the greater uncertainty for the defense. So the Seahawks preferred run play looks - to my eyes - to be running straight up the middle. So they do it again, and again, and again, and . . . well, you get the picture. That's all well and good so long as you average at least 3.4 yards per carry. Otherwise you're going to punt on 4th down, if you're not actually losing yards. The 'Hawks get one, maybe two, long carries per game. So many of the run plays are for negative gain, or zero, one, or two yards. It seems like the run game has been trash since Marshawn Lynch left. He would get 4 yards before contact and then another 4 yards carrying a swarm of defenders hanging on him. Clearly I'm no offensive coordinator, but isn't running that same play that worked with Marshawn and doesn't work with any of the other running backs and expecting a different outcome still the definition of insanity?

If I were able to bet against every "straight up the middle run" not making 4 yards in a Seahawks game, I think I would make a lot of money. To my lesser trained eye, it looked like when Cincinnati ran the ball, they knew what they were doing. And their passing game wasn't half bad either. And their goal line defense clued me in to knowing where the "Legion of Boom" went after leaving Seattle.

What am I missing? T.I.A.

Part of it is O-line not effectively blocking, part of it is the long time Pete Carroll thing where there just isn't a lot of creativity in the play calling. You'll very occasionally see a new play here and there, but Pete just doesn't run a very creative system. It's fine when it works, but it's super frustrating to watch when it doesn't, because all too often, you see little to no in-game adjustment even if things aren't working.

Like the red zone dumpster fire yesterday - kept calling long-developing plays despite Geno getting killed on each one.

Cincinnati had 46 yards rushing on 15 attempts.
Seahawks had 87 rushing yards on 25 attempts.
Neither team ran the ball worth a damn.
2 picks and 4 sacks, a few of them in key situations killed the Seahawks. Their play calling was pretty lackluster, nothing in the way of plays to slow down Cincy, no pre snap motion, no screens, nothing...

The complete absence of pre-snap motion is one of the most glaring things about this system when comparing to other teams.
 
Would think Waldron would be dialing up a lot of motion, as he has done so in the past.
The long developing plays with a banged up O line are puzzling also. You'd think getting rid of the ball fast would be a priority, dinking and dunking the ball down field until you get a chance for a one on one downfield and a shot at a big play.
But... Pete doesn't take my calls.

And Geno is really good at that type of play, unlike his predecessor. Why they aren't utilizing that more is baffling to me.

Geno should be good at that type of pass. It is called self-preservation.
 
Yeah the previous guy just ran around till he got sacked, rather than take the checkdown.

You look at the stats and the Seahawks put up numbers to win compared to Cincy, but a few key turnovers and sacks wound up to be the game. While they played poorly on offense, the game was still within reach.
 
I‘m still bummed about the game….so many chances to win. The defense kept us in the game, wish they would’ve got a pick six since the offense didn’t find the end zone enough. DK’s bad attitude…..man up! Someone else tell him….I’m not going to. DANG HAWKS
