Sports teams have learned very little from the Bobby Bonilla deal back in 2011. Bonilla still collects about 1.2 million dollars a year and the payments will continue until 2035! Paying old players young money based on past performance is a really bad business model but so many of them do. I thought Wilson was washed up years ago and yet he parlayed average talent into a giant contract. Every sport has examples of this as ex great players past their prime are able to convince also-ran teams that adding a former mega jock will reverse their fortunes. It rarely happens and teams are spending money on guys in rocking chairs that would be better spent developing young talent.
Although not football related, the Dodgers have the best blueprint for success of any team in sports. Their farm system is the envy of baseball and the reason they can attract so many top players from other teams-they simply have more talent capitol to trade with than teams that try to succeed via free agency. Over the years they have had twice as many Rookie of the Year winners than the next best team with a pipeline of talent always waiting in the wings. And since they are so successful on the field they attract a helluva lot of fans-almost 4,000,000 a year at times-with the attendant cash flow to usually field a good team.
We have all seen teams that pay a star player vast sums of money and then can't afford a supporting cast to make for a successful team. It will be interesting to see which team will bankrupt it's talent pool and coffer to get Shohei Ohtani next year.
