Puget Sound

Been doing some reconnaissance on new beaches last couple days. Managed to go 2/4 on coho keeping one for tonight’s dinner. An all white stinger fly was the trick around the bait.

Then went 1/2 on pinks, releasing the one. Was hating the new running line I spooled up so I admittedly did it on gear, made it easier with fido as the temps cooled.

Morning fog was pleasant today.

Today was Opposite Day. Early light under a marine layer, nothing going on. About 10:30 the action started as the sun was breaking through!

5/6 Coho, 4 wild, one clipped. One wild was chunky, pic doesn't do it justice, but you can see it's a thick fish looking near the tail. Multiple runs, and as soon as it earned the reel, it would bullet straight back at me. Despite my transition back to frantic stripping, the line went slack twice. Two sessions of "oh no", followed by "it's still on" cheering from the beach gallery.

I started out thinking this could be a skunking, but it transitioned into a mighty fine day!

Plus, I didn't break my Boost Blue 6wt, which seems to have become a thing recently. 🤣

That's a coho the dog is looking at.

Based on the spots not being oval? I was wondering too but wasn’t sure since I couldn’t see the tail.

Of course I knew that 😗😁 fak really!? Dots ontop of tail and I thought the scales were smaller, left my hand slimy all made me think pink lol.

My rating of that beach just changed then for the better if coho. Dog likes to watch them swim off and gets all excited so a win for him.

Spots on the top….or bottom of the tail don’t always tell the true story. 😉 😂

Hello kype! The dots along the back of that one look different than mine, I’m still conflicted if it was a pink or ho.

Boy I thought I had classification down until really going after salt fish on an odd yr. I’ll start asking the fish how it wants to identify 🙃

Look at the scales. The scales on pink salmon are tiny compared to any other pacific species. Spots can fool people but scales are for sure.
This photo by @jasmillo illustrates better than any I've seen the difference between coho and pinks.

Wow those are killer, love the coloring. I ended up getting a second Echo Boost 7wt from Pacific Fly Fishers Thursday night and ended up going 3/5 yesterday morning before work on pinks, no Coho seen. I'm picking up a 6wt Sage Foundation combo from my girlfriend's brother in law later this month in Durango so I'll start using that when I begin the North Sound search for SRC's. There's an event going on at the beach I've been frequenting and the security patrol kicked me off the beach this morning as I rolled up to start fishing at first light. Considering the beach is not being used in any capacity and the event doesn't start until 11AM it was a bit of a bummer to say the least. Headed to Snoqualmie area this afternoon for a wedding and hope to find some time tomorrow to check some things out to switch it up. We'll see.

Yours is a coho as @Wanative pointed out. 😉

47° this morning at the first beach.
Wish it had stayed that cool. I’ve ordered some clouds. 😉

Definitely harder to get them to eat this morning but a lot of fun seeing them chase the fly to the boat and get all indecisive about it, you can almost see the gears turning in their heads.
One time there were at least 5-6 good fish that followed @jasmillo fly like a pack of dogs chasing a ball, that was quite a sight.
First fish to slime the new net.
