I’m still a little skeptical of his pitching, he’s stepped up though that’s for sure!
Have not seen the 100 or 101 fastball as much, was wondering if that was due to more usage.

Yeah, the velo hasn't seemed to be what it was even a couple months ago. Haven't checked but I feel like he's had more weak contact hits as of late than he was having earlier in the year. Could be usage. Hard to say.
He definitely has a more "wild ride" style to closing out a game. Seems like amongst good closers there's a few who are kind of just straight up lock down closers, and a few who like to take the fans on a bit of a ride before eventually sealing the deal.
He added a 2 seam fastball (or sinker depending on verbiage) and has been throwing it more than his 4 seam. In general 2 seam fastballs run a couple mph lower, I'm not sure he's broken 100 mph with it. I think that explains a good part of it.

According to MLB.com his 4 seam last year averaged 100.2, while in August ‘23 it was 98.5. It seems he’s tinkering with pitches more as a dedicated closer, which is both good and bad.
Let’s just hope he stays good through our inevitable playoff run.

Well, you got what you wished for. M's still in first place in the division, by a thread.We left runners on 2nd with no outs twice tonight, that was first half of the season Mariners baseball.
The forkball I will say was absolutely ridiculous, hat tip to Senga.

I don't think the Mariners were as bad as their record was April through June, but honestly don't think they're as good as their record has been in July and August. IMO they're breathing rarified oxygen right now. If they regress back to pre-surge stats their tenure in the playoffs will be short if they make it at all. If they keep this run going they could go all the way to the big show. My guess is they'll normalize to something in between and that will make for some exciting times.
Either way I've already got my money's worth this year from my Direct TV subscription. Most of my planned fishing was cancelled by closures and fires. Watching this M's crew while tying flies and playing board games with the wife helped keep me sane.
Best of luck to everyone's ML teams. This has been a great year of baseball so far and should only get better!
