Puget Sound

Hit the late morning incoming 10:30 - 12:30, really good fishing for an hour and a half till the sun came full blazing out, prior it was nice cloud deck and some drizzle. Went 5/5 on the same pattern with a few missed grabs. I think 3 residents and 2 pinks but dam sometimes hard to tell, all released.

In the pics below which are pinks vs coho ?? I have my suspicions but would like some validation.20230825_124519.jpg20230825_113459.jpg20230825_111718.jpg20230825_111716.jpg

In order, Pink, Coho, Coho.

I was pretty confident in that marker as well, the weird thing is I've been fishing this road end beach for a month, landed a fair amount of fish over that time frame and I'm pretty confident they've all been Rezzies until today. Lucky I guess although I'm perfectly happy to connect with pinks they are fun.

No luck for me today at the secret area 11 spot. I woke to thunder and rain and since low tide was to be at 6am I decided to sleep in a bit. I got to the beach st 10:30 and started fishing in the rain and breeze, which gave way to bright sun and calm.

Saw very few caught, a couple to my right and one other to a kid way down the beach. Nice day out though and got some sun.

I probably won’t brave the weekend crowds and it’s back to work next week. But this week has been a nice foray back into the beach flyfishing scene though. I’ve been away from it way too long.

I believe my suspicions of coho vs pink are confirmed 90% of the time before landing them. Sometimes though, a humpy gone crazy will trip me up!

What's your experience?

100%. My experience is mostly from a boat, which I think would accentuate the differences. Pinks will bulldog you and kick your ass/break your wrists trying to swim straight down. They pull hard. Coho go apeshit, slack line you, jump, run under the boat, generally just go nuts, but I find them far quicker to land on the boat than a Pink of similar size.

Every once in a while though you get a Pink that has been hanging out with the Coho too long and will surprise you. Ha!

How did I know all the verbs would start flying? Watch here come some more! 🥳 When you're an escape artist, you have a much bigger bag of tricks!
