Women’s World Cup 2023

I’m new here. For a minute I had to check to see if I was on ifish.
This thread could use some house cleaning if I say so myself.

Cmon guys, we're better than this. Like Josh said, if there's a thread about something you're not in to, then leave it alone. We haven't had to moderate anything in a really long time but this thread may need a bit of cleanup.

A fairly mediocre showing against Portugal to advance to the next round…if we keep playing like this, we’ll be out soon

Like, the next game. That was an awful performance that I wish I hadn't taken the time out of my night to watch.

Wonder how much money the Colombians placed against themselves to throw their game against Morocco?

I think they will rise to the occasion and knock the Swedes out, getting in the right headspace and on track, we'll see...

USWNT not playing at the level their skill says they should be.

On the other hand, Jamaica's shut down defense impressively got them through to the next round. So that was a kinda cool underdog story.

The underdogs have been the best of the tournament for me, some great games there. The US doesn’t look good but that’s OK with me, some great soccer taking place. And there’s some great looking wimmen there 😉

Our ladies will be fine. Teams have figured out to take a foul in the midfield as soon as the US starts on the counter. Teams also do anything they can to keep Smith from running. They foul, grab and double to counter her athleticism.

I think that Rapinoe coming in almost turned that game. Her ability to provide service to Morgan is something that they need. LaVelle and Rapinoe are the 2 players who provide creativity when the play slows. Losing LaVelle for the next match hurts a lot. With LaVelle out they have to play Rapinoe. I gotta believe that they have Rapinoe penciled for the final 20 minutes unless they are ahead. There is risk to playing her. Rapinoe's aggressive nature also nearly cost them. She came close to a few ugly turnovers in bad places. She also does not run like she used to and has always been an ambivalent defender.

I've been surprised at how much I've enjoyed these games. Looking forward to the rest of this series (is "series" the correct term??🥴)

Oh dang! I didn't realize that Brendan Hunt (Coach Beard on Ted Lasso) and Rebecca Lowe's (English presenter for NBC) World Cup podcast was back for the Women's World Cup. I really enjoyed the Men's World Cup version, so it's cool that someone decided to fire it up again.

It's available on most podcast platforms.

Rough loss for the USA women. But given how they'd been playing, and how the rest of the world seems to be catching up to the USWNT overall, seemed like it was bound to happen.

So goes the world of sports.
