Splicing line

I can't tell if y'all are teasing or not. I say mainline but that's the tapered leader or butt section, not for fly line.

Double and triple surgeons are good knots, but a blood knot lays down slimmer which can be handy with larger diameter tippet or when algae is a problem. And they aren’t that complicated or difficult once you get some left hand dexterity. I use both depending on the situation. If you’re ever bored on your couch, grab a spool of 12# mono and learn a new knot or get better at one you already know. There are tons of knots out there, not saying you need to know them all by any means, but it doesn’t hurt to learn a new one. If you tie 50 of one knot you’ll probably have it for life.

Blood knot is much easier to tie (for me) and doesn't waste as much line. And, according to this guy the blood knot is stronger.

I didn't watch the video so I'm speaking (typing) out of turn but I was taught that the surgeon's knot is stronger than the blood knot. I can tie both but find the surgeon's knot faster and for my style of fishing that's what I "usually" use.

Tom, Im not. I've definitely been tying it "wrong" all along.

I basically would line up the tips and tie it there, which leads to the angle.
I think the best way to explain what I've been doing is tying my surgeons knot in the same manner I tie a surgeons loop, and the 2 separate lines replace the loop. @mcswny thank you for speaking up, I almost feel less dumb not being alone here!
I recall more than once as a kid cutting a tangle out of spinning line and trying to repair it that way. It always snagged and wouldn't cast. Some old guy on the dock showed me a blood knot and said that would do better until I got home, and he was right. We just don't know what we don't know until we are shown sometimes. You guys catch a lot of fish, obviously it hasn't hindered you too much.

When one is dealing with 20lb, 95% vs 92% strength is completely a moot point. I could see worrying if you're getting down into the 6x territory or as mentioned, heavy salad.....although that always seems to catch ony nonslip loop long before my surgeon's. Regardless, a well tied "insert favorite here" knot is gonna be 100x better than a poorly tied "insert what the experts tell you" knot.

I do need to get better with blood knots though for reasons above...they're just slimmer.

I used to really avoid tying blood knots in the field, thinking I could only execute them properly at home with a toothpick or bodkin and 3 warm hands . Then I watched John Hazel’s steelhead video and saw how easily he whipped one out when constructing a leader. Using his technique it’s a lot easier to do on the water, though I still sometimes revert to a surgeon if I’m in a hurry or don’t have the luxury of a lot of length of leader to work with.

I confess that I have never mastered the Perfection Loop. I just use a figure 8 on a bight for end loops.

Shit, when dealing with 20#, 80% is moot. That's breaking at 16#. We put maybe 3# of pressure on a fish at best.

I was trying to be generous there.....

Didn't mind that knot on bigger line throwing my streamer, yet it was a bit annoying to say the least yesterday evening on a smaller tippet and a small dry fly even with the tags trimmed down

I'm a blood knot guy for mono to mono. Just never found it to be very difficult.

For braid to braid the double uni knot can't be beat.

Braid to mono I like the RP knot. Very similar to the Albright. Fast to tie, slim enough for my needs, and never had one fail.
