I would give baseball a B+ for the changes they have made. As noted, some tweaks have worked, others haven't. With over 80 different feeds a week there is a lot of baseball on and it is easy to see what still needs to be done. The strike zone. It is infuriating to see so many guys struck out on ball 4 or walked on strike 3. Some of the calls are just outrageous, tonight I saw a guy struck out on a pitch that was ankle high and at least 5 inches outside. The ump got pretty pissy/poopy when he was questioned about it.
It appears that the rectangular strike zone depicted on TV is a one-size-fits-all kind of a deal and it shouldn't be. There are players in the majors from 5'6'' to 6'11', how the hell can the strike zone be the same for all of them? There are statistics for everything in baseball, I'm sure they know the height of every player. If strikes are going to be called electronically-and they should be-then every player should have his own strike zone, not some generic determination. If we can put a probe on an asteroid 14 million miles out is space and bring a sample back to earth we certainly ought to be able to identify a strike zone that is only 60' 6'' away and size it to the batter.
